Hi all, My '93 2+2 air con stopped pumping cold air today. Worked fine upto yesterday , Everything operates and indicates as normal, just no cold air (and in Darwin in a Red Z - its gets hot! I check the fuse and condensor lead( the lead worked free last year) both are ok. does the Z have any issues with air con or is this a case of take it to a wrench......... thanks all Vulcan NT
Compressor failure is a real problem at this age. Most of them are reaching the end of their life at 20 years old or there abouts. If it is the compressor it's not a cheap fox. About $800 for a reconditioned one and about the same again on labour to replace the dead one. Don't do what I did......bought a second hand compressor. It died six month later and I had to spend the money all again. Hopefully it will be something more simple in your case.
Or if you can get a 2nd compressor for next to nothing, it's up to you, but you could go down that path. My compressor cost me $40. BUT - I will have to re-gas it, and if it doesn't work, then it'll need re-gassing again, and that's where the expense is.
Second hand would really depend on whether or not you want to fit it yourself. if I was paying someone, I'd just save for an extra week or 2 and get a new one.
maybe you just need to regas it? have you checked that out, before you spend money on a new compressor
Firstly, thanks for the imput guys and gals, i have wondered what is going on as a few days prior it was as cold as anything and next ride was just hot air. i cant see gas going from stone cold to 32C I dont know about the compressor or the electrics that control the cold air door in the air con box. I have the service manual and there is a ton of crap going on with climate control AC, over 10 electrical areas under the dash alone contributing to the operation....then under the bonnet also.... i may just have to go to an Air con wrench and wait and hope.......woe is me.....<g> vulcan NT
Actually, if you think about it, a sudden gas leak will cause it to go from cold to hot overnight, and you won't find it by looking. You may just have to get it to an A/C specialist afterall.
