Hi all have confirmation that my engine is pretty much stuffed. the mechanic sort of hinted that our engines arent really worth the hassel and suggested maybe a skyline engine. What particular engine would u suggest and what sort of price tag would be attatched??
    Cheers

I would suggest another VG30. I would also suggest getting a different mechanic to work on your car.

Seriously, this mechanic of yours reckons VG's aren't "worth the hassle" and then suggests putting in a COMPLETELY DIFFERENT ENGINE as a solution? Obviously he must be some kind of mega-mechanic who isn't fazed by something as mundane as an engine swap, but suffers from some kind of oddly-specific brain injury that renders him unable to work on a simple 3-litre V6.

If he's that unwilling to work on a 300ZX and doesn't share any of your enthusiasm for the car, then you should find someone who does.

The mechanic suggested getting a Skyline or putting a Skyline engine in the 300ZX? RB26DETT (only engine worth considering for a swap) is around 2000-3000 second hand on eBay, while a VG30DETT is only $1000-$1500. Now, add on at least a couple of k for a conversion to get the RB26 into your 300 and you looking at an extra 4k-5k at least. Now, buy a VG30 off eBay and use that extra 4k-5k to build it up.

take a copy of zx2nv's (jason) post which provides

an AUTOSPEED article setting out just how good the VG30DETT is ... take it to your mechanic, give it to him and .... then, as you leave never to return, tell him that he does not have bloody clue of what he is on about ....!!!!!

If you have an idle 10,000$ sitting around, you might be able to afford putting something in besides a VG30. Otherwise, unless you're doing the work yourself, you're out of luck.

    gee

thats sort of a relief. I dont want 2 tinker with it 2 much and im not exactly rolling in it so it looks like a new 2nd hand vg30 and a new mechanic is on the cards.

I'd get a second opinion if I were you. Obviously your 'mechanic' does not understand the VG engine, so how would he know what's wrong with it, or how it can be fixed.

    Don't do anything .....

other than get another opinion. From what you told me in your PM I think it might be worth the cost of a Ferry trip to come over with the car to Melb and have one of the people here take a look at it!:)

Some stuffed hoses and wires don't a "Stuffed" engine make!!!

those are the words of an under-informed and over-opinionated mechanic. my advice is to get a second opinion . do you know the specifics of your stuffed engine? is it seized? running badly? wont run?

A couple of months ago the car startes leaking a whole lot of water. it was ok aslong as kept topping it up. but now it is starting to steam up and over heat. The water and steam is comming from the back of the engine so we couldnt see alot. so i took it 2 a mechanic. they are saying that all the hoses need replacing plus the wiring cuz its coroding. the heat or something. the engine it's self since the day i bought hasnt had the power i would expect from a tt. like i cant explain. my gf'a mzda 3 is just about as fast. so i just dont know if the engine in the car is worth it. there is something seriously wrong with it. might be running on less cylinders i honestly dont know. I would happily put another vg30. My mate is suggesting a rebuild...

Who is your mechanic? r u in the south/north of Tas?

Hey buddy who told you that VG30 motors arnt worth the Hassle? which Mech
    in tassie?
He is obviously a skyline lover, I like skylines but if you do the math it will cost you twice as much to put a skyline motor in a Zed plus you have to get it over the pits , then an engineering Certificate the list will just keep going on. JUst do what black baz said. Find a mechanic who knows what he is talking about.
    cheers Zedipated:zlove:

Sorry Mr Pex Sir !!!...read on!

Mr Kouta said his engine had stuffed hoses and needed belts etc and the wires were shot from the heat. He also said it never made good power .....or at least what he expected from a TT .....and that a Mazda 3 could just about beat him in a ........what are those things called........oh yes.......Drag!:)

    Oops.......maybe i am confused........maybe drag was referring to what Baz wears !!!!:D :D :D :D

Replacing hoses may be necessary but what is his proof that your engine is actually "stuffed"? Has he done a compression test on it? Has he checked for error codes to determine whether you're running in Safety boost?
Definately get another opinion. Even a forum member's opinion is probably more valid than your mechanic's take on things...

Sounds like an under plenum bypass is in order, and you are probably stuck in safety boost by the sounds.
Any one with conzult could tell you, or do the ECU diagnostic yourself

    I made a suggestion......

that a Ferry ride and drive to someone of more repute in Melb. was in order.:) Hope I wasn't out of line?!?!?:D :bash:

A mech that suggests swapping to another engine, shouldn't be working on a zed.

Its sad that so many mechs just can't be bothered working in the 300ZX engine bay (even when owners are willing to pay for the time).

The workshop I totally trsuted 100% with my 180SX were up front and told me "if you buy I 300ZX, to be honest we dont want to work on it"

I respect them for that as they are an AWSOME workshop and have enough business to pick and choose what they spend their time on.

That is the kind of upfront honesty you want.

They are not easy to find, but find a GOOD workshop that has enthusiasm for the zed, and stick with them.

Na not at all, although maybe someone from Tas can put up their hand and offer assistance on the Diagnostic side ;)
