I'm looking to purchase a 300zx (1992) and want to know what they are like fuel wise. Do they chew alot of petrol? Twin Turbo vs the N/A model...what is the difference like in fuel economy? Kms to ltrs?

    Cheers

This is relative i suppose. Compared to an excel. Yeah. Compared to other sports car of similar calibre, no. Realistically, it depends on how well your car is running. It doesn't take many things to be wrong before your fuel consumption goes out the window. 300 kilometres to a tank of petrol (Tank capacity: 72 litres) isn't uncommon.

Heres a link to a previously posted thread on the issue.

    If you are worried about...>>

fuel economy then buy a Barina or an Excel.

FFS....the zed has a mass over 1500kg, a 3 litre VG30DE(TT) motor and was made to go fast and have some fun. If you are concerned about fuel economy then think also about the cost or rego and insurance. If you are worried about the price of fuel then don't buy a big car and this includes the zed.

Yep, that's about it....had it to the back teeth with this type of post.

    Vent finished.

That a bit rough zcar - it's his first post

You're scaring off the new members!

And it's a fair enuff to suss out all pros and cons when deciding what car you'll buy.

JSE - it's a common topic - do a search for 'fuel economy' and you'll find out more than you need to know ;)

    Only thing about that

(as per twinturbo.net) is that the 'older' members seem to look down on the other members with that tag. (the feeling I sometimes get when browsing that forum). What about members who could be quite the guru when it comes to zeds but not post very often? (but still have a noob tag).

I think the Date Joined, and Post Count (as well as the 'rank') is good enough without the need for a visual tag to be placed on members. (and with all the new members joining up the forum would be littered with the noob tag!) :)

Just my thoughts. Feel free to disagree!

    Policy, not icon.

I just think that new members need to have their needs recognised as well.

Flaming more experienced members is fine with me (You all better be prepared when i finally get a Z and post my "Because regular Zs are slow, I'm building a flying one" thread.) But i think new members should have some sort of protection against it.

    Fuel Economy:

    My cars:

    N/A - near stock - 400-450kms x 50 ltrs town, 500 - 550 kms x 50 ltrs highway.

    TT Stock but with a big (heavy) fibreglass bodykit - 350 - 400 kms x 50 ltrs town, 450 - 500 kms x 50 ltrs highway.

Both need 98 RON PULP - the N/A because timing is advanced, the TT because it needs it anyway.

    Cheers,

    Peter

    Fuel economy

When my car was a stock NA I got 575km around town to 65L of fuel (keep in mind this is Canberra City and 'off peak' conditions. On the highway got up to around 630km (with some of that city driving)

When I modded it up, fuel economy dropped to 450-500km per 65L of fuel.

As a 260kw twin turbo, 330-350km to 60L of fuel.

This is for a 4 seater targa top version (so among the heavyweights of the zeds) driving in off peak Canberra (where traffic is light say compared to peak hour Sydney or Melbourne etc).

Searching will reveal many others experiences :)

    I see what you mean

When I saw what date he joined (today) and the number of his posts (1) I thought it best to respond differently to if he had joined say last year and or had quite a few posts in his name.

The 'Fuel Economy' question was among the first I asked, but it was more to introduce myself, participate and get a feel for the active members on board.

welcome aboard, jse ...enjoy your zed ...and do not be too

concerned about the discussion you have generated ..this is a fairly common event, searching for ways to develop, improve and add to the forum ...

we all start off as newbies, and in my case, despite a number of posts, despite having experienced a multitude of zed problems, improvements and minor mods, i regard myself very much as a noobie, a zed igno, an electrical/mechanical/tecnical dumbo ... but this forum has extended itself to assist me in a myriad of ways .. i am sure that you will find the same ...:)

    Fuel Economy (Thanks to some)

Thankyou to OZ-300, Doom and Shifter for the responses. Im weighing up the pros and cons of a Z vs a 180. Your comments are appreciated and on-board. I don't think I will be coming back to often on this forum though when a friendly question about a Zed related issue gets put down by some members and the date of my joining is questioned...After all this is a 300zx related forum not a "see how many posts someone has before answering their question" forum.

Don't let it get to you JSE.

Sometime we forget that we were all newbs once.

A well running Zed will get you 400k min per tank under heavy foot and 600km+ per tank on the FWY.

You will get less if the tune is bad or the car is heavily modded.

I also have a 2001 TJ magna 3.0l v6 and the TT Zed uses less fuel if I drive it like grandma.

    BigCol That's what she said...

    You'll always be welcome here

but you have to understand, that some of us have seen most of the 4000+ members appear on this forum, and a large percentage of them have asked the same 10 questions straight out of the box. It bugs older members 'cos we have literally seen (and answered) these questions thousands of times, and it bugs you because we seem insensitive.

As for your question, it is a hard one to answer. Any car can be good on fuel depending on how you drive it. There are guys in both TT & NA that have obtained fantastic mileage figures (well over 600k per 72 litre tank). But then if you have stuffed O2 sensors and a heavy right foot you may be lucky to see 300km per tank in either TT or NA.

There is an excellent search facility on this site. Learn to use it. Use different search words. Use different search word combinations. See what you come up with. 90% of all topics covered here have been covered at some point in the past. But most of all welcome!

    Re: Welcome JSE

500 kilometres for a tank seems like a good target for an in shape zed.

There are a lot of things you'll need to test to make sure they are working before you can hope to achieve these kind of numbers though.

Ones i can think of that have helped other members include:
    -Check O2 Sensors
    -Check Injector Connectors
    -Clean throttle bodies
    -Check coolant temp sensor
-Check for boost / vac leaks
    -Check base timing
    -Check air filter

    etc.

Edit: Just searched tech. What do ya know, we already have an article.

    Right here.

JSE pay no attention to it.

Alot of people get flamed when they join, dont let it deter you from buying a z. I would most definitely go with a 300zx, unless you're buying a 98 Type X 180sx which is also better for drifting. Otherwise my choice is a twin turbo z to cruise around with the targas off. Try to use the search function, you can avoid having your head ripped off by grumpy old forum members.

    Cheers.

  18. red32

    red32 You talkin' to me?

My usual response to this question is to say that my NA gets

around 8.3L/100km under highway conditions, which works out to over 800km per tank, but that I've no idea what happens around town 'cause my odometer does not always function, and I have this tendancy to have some fun on freeway on-ramps (ie, fang it)
On the recent trip back to Melbourne from Berri (SA) via Mildura, I noticed that the fuel guage in my NA was at about the same level (quarter-tank) as Peters' TT when we stopped at the Calder Park Maccas, after both filling in Mildura, suggesting that a TT CAN get similar mileage to the (usually) more economical NA if driven conservatively.
And, JSE, don't stop asking questions. There's no such thing as a stupid question, only stupid answers!

    zed4life (zedcare.com) Ω vicarious zedder Ω

Note for those who have 'terrible' fuel consumption regardless

of whether they have fixed their 02's and every other poor fuel consumption cause)... Don't trust your odometer to be 100% accurate.

The odometer in z32's is still a mechanical device that can run slow or fast. In reality, you may well be getting 400K+ out of a tank but your odometer only shows 350 etc...

Also forget what the fuel guage needle says and trust the low fuel light. This is prob the most accurate instrument in the car. as it's output mechanism in the fuel tank is either on or off, (not a sliding gradient scale like the needle which is open to innacuracy).

When it comes on, you still have 15 litres (I think or is that 10?, can someone with better memory correct me please)
