This is indeed a very tragic event.

The real tragedy, is that it will be forgotten by the majority of people, in a few days.
Steven, Mijake, Shifter and others, make very valid arguments for and against increased restrictions on young drivers, but the truth is that no restrictions will have the desired results. Education is the only answer, but it must be intense(not some half-hearted attempt to "appear" to be doing something, as long as it doesn't break the allocated budget.)
Those calling for banning the use of "Sports vehicles" by young people, would do well to consider that this accident was reported as a 160kph episode. How many vehicles on our roads today, are incapable of such speeds? I suggest, very few, if any, so this could have happened in a Ford Festiva, Hyundai Excel, or a Daihatsu Lanos, with equally devastating results.

It's not the 'vehicle' that killed 2 passengers...

... it was the DRIVER! Sad ... but fortunate not to have taken other wholly innocent lives as well.

    nah

blow that, it's not the jerks sliding about in the wet in there shit cars that cause big problems. It's people driving way too fast. People don't die much at 35 km/h sliding into a gutter, they die at 160 km/h and getting outta shape, hitting something or flipping or whatever. Those guys in the wet may be dicks, but they don't cause fatalities

    Only going by what news.com.au

    has to say...

I would say it is improbable that the father is/can be responsible.

The car was basically "stolen" (from his father) by an adult (18+ yo). Went for a joy ride and took peoples lives along with his own. Double murder suicide?

If the driver was still 17, it may be a different case.

Have always believed that a higher standard of driver training is required in Australia. The big plus that comes with driver training apart from improved skill is knowledge of limits that will in turn curb driving attitude.

The government will always look to a shortcut such as P plate power restrictions etc. Even with such a restricition, it problably would not have prevented this tragedy from occuring.

My feelings go out to the families involved.

I disagree that more restrictions are required - what he was doing was already illegal.

the news? ignorant ppl believe reporters.

my mate at an insurance company told me it is impossible for the coppers to work out speed when accidents occur and so on. Speed cameras are maths: spped is equal to distance divided by time. but accidents? when was reaction time? the thickness of the rubber in the skid? phhhhff. they cant work out
s^%t. point being... dont believe the news.

next we will actually believe that the only fatalaites are P plate drivers with hotted up cars!

    Not precisely...

... the police themselves admit determining exact speed is difficult, if not impossible. They can by examining all the factors get a reasonable estimation.
Don't think the issue is the exact speed.... we can all see from the damage that this car was going too damn fast!!

    2 changes to law!!

Admittedly they would not help this case as driver was licensed!! and not being persued!
Make... running from Police a jailable offence as should being caught driving unlicensed or unregistered.
I don't mean send a summons, I mean straight to jail!!

Maybe if this idiot had "suffered" a little more at the hands of the law he might not have been quite so stupid.

You do the crime you serve the time...

We are very lucky in Australia to have a law enforcement agency that will on 90% of ocassions, catch the perpetrator(s) of most crimes. My point being, if you do something wrong, expect to get caught and in this case they got "caught out" with their own precious lives. I have always been a proponent of speed in a controlled environment ie. raceways, drag strips etc. Sure, go for your lives there, at least then you're doing it with that thing called a "helmet" stuck on your head. I'm surprised that the 32 year old in the car didn't stop the driver from getting to those speeds.

The other thing is youngish blokes + fast cars + chicks = show offs.

And youngish blokes + fast cars = measuring dicks.

Having said all of the above, my condolences go out to the berieved families. :(:(:(
