Just bought a 1984 VG30ET Z31 Turbo, i knew the turbo was broke when i bought it, thats why i got it cheap ($2,000) the car itself is in top shape, but the turbo is apparently cracked, and lots of smoke comes out of the exaust when accelerating.
I got a quote for 2k at least from my mechanic, apparently the engine has to be taken out to replace the turbo with a new one. and that is gonna cost alot for labour.anyway.. just wondering if im getting ripped off or not.

$2000 to replace a turbo is about right especially when that includes engine remove and replace. All depends too on what turbo they are replacing it with (new or second hand, different brand, etc). Having a Z31 makes it cheaper with only having one snail to be concerned about.

I've seen people charged $800 in labour just to do a 100K service and there is no engine removal there!

One of many reasons I did the re-build at home was I had been quoted 24hrs at $80 an hour for the removal/installation. Depending on where you go labour costs are a killer

    red32 You talkin' to me?

Love the look of the Z31 (nice set of pics, there)

My son owned one B4 he (and I) got our Z32's. Downside was that I could never find a comfortable seating position in it. Had the BEST exhaust note though. You will probably have noticed, though, that this is predominantly a Z32 site, so you may not get the answers you are looking for.

    Turbo swap...

Had an engine swap done by Just Jap in Sydney for $1500 (total labour), so your quote might be a bit high. There are quite a few turbos available on eBay at present - new and used - T25 or T28 should fit OK. T25 is the stock on Z32s; T28s are Skyline etc.
Some Zedders have swapped turbos on the Z32 without removing engine, but apparantly you need smallish hands, lots of partner support (to bring cups of tea, or better!) and definitely need to know how to swear...!!

Stick with the T3 that's on it, unless you want to go a hybrid T4/T3 setup. Rebuilt stock turbo should be around $750 and the T4 setup $1000.

Whoever told you that the engine needs to come out to do the turbo is talking s*it.

PM me if you are interested..

not sure if its the smaller/same size/bigger than what you have as stock...

    How good is this??:):)
I know this is a little "off track", but here we are with Z31 as well as Z32 owners(and there's even a few 240,260 & 280 owners out there as well).:D:D:D
There's no doubt about it, the Zed is a herd animal. Long live the Zed!!!!:zlove::zlove::zlove::zlove:
