Hey guys, for the past few months now my NA zx has been knocking from the top of the engine it wasn't too bad at the start, it was only Knocking at start up and then it would go away, but now it seems like it doesn't go away below 2000 revs my friend thinks that the lifters are the problem, does anyone know how to fix this issue if that's the problem? Or someone who can fix it, located in Melbourne? Or something to fix it in the meantime? Hope you's can help me out =[
How old is the oil? What grade/type/brand etc? A lifter "tick" is very different from an engine knock... If it is indeed the lifters you can remove them and rebulid them easy enough, or buy new ones if you're lazy.
Your friend may well be right. If your engine is getting on a bit you may need to change to a heavier oil, that might help if it is lifters.
It's not too hard, it's a bit fiddly more than anything http://www.a12-racingteam.nl/content/view/39/25/ The above is a Z31 but the same process will apply for rebuilding the lifter more or less.
I changed the oil about 2 weeks ago, I was recommended Penrite SIN 15 (15W-40) synthetic by autobarn, it sounded like a little tick a last month now it sounds more like a knock =[, what else could the problem be if it was a knock??
The oil pressure is on 0 which I know is not good but it's been like that since I bought it and it never made a loud tick/knock before how would I fix it?
Wow, dont drive it. The oil pressure gauge could be faulty, or the sender unit faulty or you really have no oil pressure and you just roasted the engine. I'd get this to a mechanic asap to determine if you really have oil pressure or not.
Agreed. I had a bad ticking noise from the top of my engine (NA as well), it sounded like a bunch of crickets going off. Disconnect your VCT solinoids (will take less than 30 seconds), start the car and see if that solves your issue.
Yeah I will take it down to a mechanic as soon as I can, does anyone know someone who specialises in nissans and jap cars in Melbourne? as the mechanics where I live charge heaps and work on holdens and fords, by the time these guys find the problem it would have already been 2 or 3 hours
They are at the back of the heads. Don't remove them or you'll have oil pissing out everywhere... Just unplug them.
Also check the timing belt tension. If it's knocking the covers after the tensioner it will sound like a hollow knock/tic and will disappear at around 2000rpm. Easiest way to check is to remove the passenger side cover and check the play in the belt.
Nah still can't find it, I'm hopeless haha where exactly are they located and what colour are the connectors/ wires
