What is that surpose to me, ghetto way??? I dont understand your terminology.

I also forgot to add you would never be in 4th gear at 60km anyway thats why the auto downshifts to 1st or 2nd, i only hit 4th at 80km and up and anything less and my auto automatically shiftsdown. If im cruising up to 80 kmph unless i take my foot off the accelerator i will stay in 3rd, but as soon as i drop my revs and cruise i hit 4th so where do u get this 4th at 60kmph in an auto statement from???

Also who can answer this then, if it is so bad for the auto trans why did nissan make the warning like only come on when u turn the OD off, instead of on. Basic thinking would indicate the button should be switched on as the warning light doesnt appear meaning everything is ok atm and once u turn your OD off then u are warned that you are in this mode of driving. Right or wrong??

    Ghetto/Backyard/Dodgy.

If saving gas is what motivates you to drive with OD on then you're really driving the wrong kind of car...

I was being sarcastic, but going by your explanation there why even bother having it on in the first place if it's not doing anything under 80km? The bottom line is that it's SUPPOSED to be off unless you're at the speed which it is needed, you practically half explained this yourself! lol

For people who drive properly it's clearly obvious when OD is needed, you can hear the engine wanting it if you listen to your rpms.

The real solution? Convert to manual! :p

every auto ive been in goes for 4th gear at 60km/h

IMO cars are designed (expecially autos) to be put in drive and your off... not the be pushing buttons here and there at different speeds.

i put any car in 4th at 60, i put my 4 speed manual in 4 most of the time when doing 60km

so basically my 80yr old grandma in her commodore should be push buttons at different speeds... i just find it had to believe....

it MAY make the box alittle cooler (i dont agree personally) but at the same time i strongly doubt it will ever make ur box last longer and what not... other wise there would be alot more design rework in the way boxes are made and such..

Talk to some manual Z32 owners and see what driving at 60km in 4th feels like for them! lol And then to make it worse what if you come to a big ass hill? Still gonna leave it in 4th? Yeah right!

This isn't really about overdrive anymore, but more about driving properly! lol

Can't compare 4th in manual and OD in a manual. 4th in a manual = 3rd in an auto.

all the manual zx owners i know cruise at 60 in 4th, and would change to 3rd going up hill.. just like everyone in the entire world (except you) who drives a manual with a similar ratio.. ie.. 98% of the 5 speed manual cars ever made..

300zxt just shutup because your points are pretty irrelevant, either say something worthwhile or take your old bunky manual z31 for a drive in third gear at 60km/h while cruising. :bash:

You missed the clue train. The Z31 manual tranny has the exact same internals as the Z32TT, but I was just speaking in general terms. My points are accurate, take that as irrelivant if you wish but you're wrong. You sound like you drive like an old lady! lol Not everyone drives like that...

I was just using that as an example, you generally dont drive up really steep hills in 3rd either until you've picked up speed in 2nd. People can argue about it all they want, you can tell by the rpms when the engine wants the next gear it's really as simple as that.

I can see why people would use it around town for mildly improved fuel economy but really thats a bit of a silly reason to do it.

The real solution? Put in a proper gearbox! :)

no i don't drive like an old lady, I drive an auto but I leave it in first and redline it contstantly around town, because it goes to about 50km/h so its pretty cool, i cruise at 5000rpm in 2nd at 80km/h too

i say leave it on dude

i mean seriously.. think of the logic behind it..

why would ANY car company make an auto that u MUST flick a switch at 70km/h or else ull fry ur box...

anyone else think that sounds dumb?

Yeh i know, im not going to fight with 300zxt and all im going to say is if you put the OD on you can go into 4th gear in your auto and its up to u if you leave it on or off. I personally leave it on all the time and it doesnt affect my cars performance or wear and tear of any kind. So its up 2 u mate. I hopw that helps

Exactly my thoughts loud, a bit useless if thats the case, if you think about it. And also why woulld nissan make a warning like for taking it off if its better to use it with the OD off??

Yeah fancy having to shift up when you go faster, how crazy! I wish my car only had one gear...

There's no fight, there's right or wrong... I think enough opinions have been given about this. Bigbaz's initial answer is right, end of story.

that was the dumbest response so far dude..

it has more then one gear... derr.. just has 1 setting.. the 'drive' setting.. thats why they made autos.. so you didnt have to do anything except stop and go

The answer was on the first page. The auto is a 4 speed box (its not like the overdrive systems of the 60's), With the overdrive button out, it will only shift as high as 3rd gear. The overdrive button lets it shift into 4th gear. Just leave it on, which gives the car the choice or 4 gears instead of 3. The car will pick whatever gear it needs depending on how you are driving it. The overdrive has no effect on the ratios of the other 3 gears. Well at least thats how my '88 GTS Skyline does it, but it also has another switch for hold/normal/power which changes when the car decides to change gear. So as long as Nissan hasn't done something dumb on the Z32 like alter the gear change points for economy when the OD button is on, then just leave it on.

Doesn't anybody have a Z32 owners manual they can look in?

Ok guys this is the gospel from Wallards who know their stuff. Turn the OD off (on a TT auto) under about 80km/hr... for me I make this above 80 not 80. Above about 90 I turn the OD on.

80 or under you have the torque convertor locking up... Wallards told me this puts a lot of strain on the gearbox. 80km with OD off is still under 3000rpm.
In my car in OD off there is a change about 80km/hr into a higher gear.. not sure if this is 4th without the TC locking up. WIth OD on my car drones a bit and as soon as you hit a hill you have to put your foot down to drop down a gear at this speed so any fuel saving sort of go out the window.

But while it's still fun to drive a 300ZX within the speed limits, etc, it is a sports car not a ecomony box. So OD on or OD off a little fuel here and there is part of the equation. The only place a 300ZX is truly economic is on a highway run. But the different is probably only 2l/100km = 2.8c km.

So you guys can make your own choice. But I'd rather a litte more fuel than a new gearbox.
