    hey guys
im prob gonna get flamed for this but i swear that i have used the search button! lol i just want to know how does the shift at will kit compare to manual? i really dunno y but here in w.a. we have an extreme shortage of tt manuals and the ones that we do have a usualy about 5 grand more than the autos lol as much as manuals are so fun i think i will either have 2 pick up a auto and do a swap (much later on when i have the money) or put in a shift at will kit im not gonna b racing her or enything i just want something that i can have abit of fun in ;) i find the auto trans abit boring lol and another question how well do the wheels spin with an auto trans? ;) thanks guys

if you want FUN MANUAL IS THE ONLY WAY, if you want to be fast off the line then AUTO is the way.

There are member's who swear by it...but i'll let them voice their own opinions...in my opinion there is no substitute for 3 pedals, don't talk to me about paddle shifts, DSG's or any of that hi-tech gadetry, just give me 3 bloody pedals and i'm happy. But i'm sure the auto's can pull great burnouts if thats where your interest lies :D

what about shift kits?(not shift at will kits) i know u can get them for your holdens n ford they make the auto change alot faster and harder but i havnt heard about any being made for 300zx?

manual mate is the only way, autos arent made for the abuse the shift at will kit, even with a auto tranny cooler u are gonna destroy the box eventually. u can source manuals, its not that hard, try cresta and look in the quokka, its well worth the time and effort!!

I think I'd prefer the shift at will but haven't used one, I'd imagine it' dbe nice and cruisy when you're feeling lazy or in peak hour traffic, fun when you wanna shift manual and with the bonus of faster times at the drags.

only put a shift kit in a car with absolutely no diff pinion play,

we see customers all the time put shift kits and cars with diff backlash,
    6months later, they're up for a diff

    no shift kits

I wanted to put a shift kit in mine but was told by a few tranny people to not waste my time because the ones they had already done didnt leave the customer very happy. Something about it not being a sporty box to begin with since it was also used in Nissans 4wd's.

Something to be said about places telling you something like that when they could have just gone for the quick buck but Im not sure how valid that point is

No matter what you do to an auto box......

it will STILL only have 4 gears

I think Franz in WA might argue with you on that one, he's run a 12.7 in a near stock manual tt

IMHO autos let the average driver run consistent times on the quarter mile, but a good driver will always run quicker times in a manual zed :zlove:

What about A AUTOMATIC LINE CONTROLLER ?

Isn't the ALC Like a shift kit ? I'm thinking of investing in one in the future.

You can buy my ALC for $200 if you want. I am converting to a manual valve body so i cant use it

Even good drivers wont pull the same time over and over again in a MT.
It depend on alot of factors for exp. weather, track temp, Tyre wear and always geting the same shift points.

Im no expert but i used to watch my cousin at the drags and clamed to be a good driver and it would take him 5 runs just to try and get the most out of his car.

Are ALC Going for $200 on TTZ there going for $800.

well if you plan on getting loads of power to the tarmac you might need to rebuild your trans but im not too sure. when I went on a cruz a while ago i think there was some who had done a shift kit To a Auto Z32 not too sure again you just have to ask around.

do you lose engine braking with the manual valve body?

is'nt there people pulling good times with stock auto trans?

Isnt there Zeders that are pulling realy good times with a stock auto transmisson ? how many of them even got a ALC that are running low 12s ?

when i was going to buy my zed i was planing on buying a MT.
but i think with a little work auto's are just as good.

I think the shfit at will kit is good for what it is but is far from an ideal paddle shift system IMO.

Why I dont like the Shift at Will Kit:
    1. It doesn't blip the throttle when downshifting - when going hard this can almost cause compression lockup. Its not good for the torque convertor either.
    2. Regardless of whether you tell it to shift, or it shifts itself - the transmission still gets bloody hot and I imagine like every other auto box would start to slip on gear changes after continuous track work - remember the z32 auto box was not designed for it
    3. Its been said before - you're still only playing with 4 tall gears!

I've driven Risk's auto with an ALC and I can tell you it makes a huge difference. To the point where it'll quite happily chirp and in some cases spin the wheels in 1st->2nd gear changes. The changes are much more definite and are alot quicker.

The auto in my zed lasted 4 weeks after I bought the car - and it didn't even go to the track in that time. Put a manual box in and I've been alot happier since then. When it comes down to it, the zed is a sports car, its not supposed to have a slush box no matter what you try to do to it!
