Im just in the process of doing a plenum pull to fix a leaky cam cover and to bypass the under plenum hoses. Also taking the opportunity to remove the EGR valve and piping. Since I no longer have AIVs and now the EGR, can I remove both the solenoids that control these? Also the metal pipe that runs along the drivers side plenum to the solenoids, I could just cap the nipples at the front of the engine? Will the ECU throw a code or something if I remove the solenoids?

    The ECU won't throw a code..........>>

It doesn't monitor the function of either solenoid. I removed mine and all the piping for it.

thanks pete, also what about the black box thing

that sits above the EGR solenoid and is teed into a hose going to the solenoid, what does that box do and can I remove it too?

That is the sender unit for the stock boost gauge.

and just incase your wondering.. the bolt to plug the turbo manifold where the EGR came from is 22mm x 1.5mm thread

i had to cut down a 60mm long bolt as its the only one i could find.. apparently a really odd size (ultra fine thread for that bolt size)

    It`s an NPT thread

National pipe thread use an npt plug.

If you cut off the existing bolt

it is easy just to weld up the middle bit and reuse it

    I thought the 1989/90's did?

From what I've read earlier ecu's did monitor these... I've got solenoid chatter that I cannot seem to stop, but if I disconnect, idle starts hunting.

Edit: anyone removed aiv's with a earlier model zed? any issues with the ecu?

    ECU does not monitor AIV.

    Re: It`s an NPT thread

thats funny.. i couldnt get any NPT threads to match up on the thread guage.. only 1.5 metric.

1.5 metric went it 3/4 of an inch (how long i cut the bolt)

mine wasnt tapered either (which NPT is)

    EGR is removed!

In case anyone wants to know, the EGR can be removed with the engine still in the car but its an absolute bastard of a job, having tiny japanese hands might help. Need to remove plenum, battery, heater hoses and metal pipe, pass side VTC makes it easier too. Fitted the 300 degree bypass kit to block off the plenum holes and fitted the nut to go on the exhaust manifold.

    EGR Removal

    Howdy JT,
long time no see. Just in the process of doing a plenum pull ATM, and have a quick question for you while sitting here at work. Which side does the pipe from the EGR go into the exhaust manifold as I havent slid under her yet to have a look. How easy is it to get that nut. The rest looks fairly straight forward just a prick to get at.

    Thanks MattB

Pipe goes to LH manifold Matt

Bugger to get at but should be able to reach it from above with the battery out of the way.

    the passenger side.

I got the nut undone from above, just remove the battery. You need to remove the water pipe that the heater hose connects onto (the Passenger side one ) as well to get the EGR undone. I left the pipe connected to the EGR and removed the EGR and pipe together from above. The pipe on the driver side needs to be cut with a hacksaw to get out. You will need a stubby 12mm spanner to get the egr side pipe bolts undune, use lots of WD40 to loosen bolts. If you have problems give me a call, its a bitch of a job.

Other things I did while at it:

Resealed cam covers and VTC solenoids
Removed AIV/EGR solenoids and piping on side of plenum
    Under plenum hose removal
New heater hoses at back of engine
    New Coil pack Plugs
    Removed Boost cut solenoids
    Painted cam covers
    Polished plenum
Rewrapped entire loom with Nitto tape
    Replaced all fuel lines

You can clearly see the pipe that JT is referring to.

    Thanks JT and Cliff?

Very handy doing most of that stuff ATM as I get time. Just PM me your number JT for emergency purposes as the advice could be handy, although should be sweet. Also putting on Twin Pods n chip, Dobsons Lowered Springs, Front and rear camber kits, a set of OBX race recliners and matbe finally the bigger intercoolers I purchase 3 months back.

    Mmmm I wish!

:LOL::LOL: Wouldnt mind front mounting one of those 60 cal's for clearing traffic, but not sure if the RTA would engineer that mod. Might leave extra pot holes everywhere (and we know NSW roads doesnt need that). .:LOL::wacko::cool:
