yes TT's are illegal on your P's

although it doesn't mention anything about them on the "black list" you will notice down the bottom of the list that it says not all cars that are illegal are on the list. i.e. its up to police discretion to nominate what is illegal. besides i you do the math,

    206/1.58= 130kw/tonne therefore illgal.

thats only reason why i went NA. sorry champ

obviously you can get permits to drive them but you must need it for work or it has to be the least powerful car owned by your family. in which case you have to get them from vic roads and they aren't easy.

by the way you can drive a GT3 on your L's if you want, any car is fine but 125kw/tonne or 3.5litres/tonne with P's

If you call vicroads that is only a broken down list on their site.

I'm warming to the idea of an NA, I'd love that. So do the NA's have any strengths, such as easier maintainence and reliability? Of course I can research in to that on this very site!

Ill look in to the dyno run, or Ill atleast talk to a mechanic about it.

And yeah, the reason I mentioned that I was in the SE suburbs was because of the fact that it's a bit hectic as far as LE goes. If it's going to happen, it'll happen in my area.

Yeah..nah no thanks! The insurance may be un-nice even if it is an NA, yeah?

The information you people have given has been awesome, there's nothing wrong with the cold hard truth when it is the reality of the situation! Your a cut above the rest - Cool but sophisticated!

Actually about 3 months back I saw a 300ZX for sale, and the owner stated that the reason he was selling was because the police were hassling him (he was on his P's), I assumed he was lying, but obviously not.

Not to worry, if I can't have one I can't have one, but having an NA sounds legally sound, and yes I don't have any anger towards the police so politeness isn't an issue! We aren't in LA.

    no way around it really..

when i got fined 4 power2weight i got told that they go by factory power, factory weight, and no dynos or weightbridge or any other excuse is gonna get you out of it..

    but really, who cares...?

$107 fine and NO demerit points, i wouldnt bother stressing

thats why i wonder if in my case i might get away with it. My olds are in Ballarat, and i have been out of home since 16 so thats 9 years (nearly 10)...

I cbf'd with a NA, although it looks i might have to.. the prospect of driving my new z for 3 years and then wishing for a TT only to find that TT's are even harder t o find (15 year rule - imports) in the future..

ill call em tomorrow... will report results..

    Hey SUCUMB

"$107 fine and NO demerit points, i wouldnt bother stressing"

True about that but arent you concerned that if you have an accident how do you plan on paying for the damage if its a major one, unless you have deep pockets or bank balance what will happen if you do 20-30k worth of damage in an accident.

Or what will you do if someone else with no insurance hits you, no offence but if you dont at least have third party you shouldnt be on the roads.

Problem is though no insurance will cover you for a car you shouldnt be driving in the first place.

    Regards

    ok..

    I have sussed it out

a TT "should" be ok, dependent on teh following:

    The weight..

If it is without fuel then you will be fine, if thast the weight with 10l of fuel then we are outta of luck.

Also you could get around it by adding extra weight and getting a engi cert.

Thats from Barry (the p2w guru apprently)

Exemptions a no-no, they dont grant them unless its for work period, and even then its only to and back from work.. nothing more.

    Damn Laws :(

    I concur

I had my car defected at a random breath testing station. I was no driving in a reckless manner and I complied with everything the officer requested.

The reason for my defect, I had a turbo timer installed, something that I did not realise was an offence at the time. The officer then proceeded to try his hardest to find any other reason he could to fine me but was unable to.

Up until that point I was under the belief that if you were not doing anything wrong then you have no reason to fear any member of the police force. Now I just avoid contact with them as much as possible and will only co-operate if given not other choice, you can not tell the motive of the individual officer until it is too late.

They have not yet introduced power to weight restriction for Probationary drivers in SA yet but there are talks of it taking place. I believe it is not the appropriate strategy. I am on my full licence so am unaffected but I still object to the legislation.

    My experience

I had this problem when I was on my P's, though the car in question was a modded V8 Ute. It was definately over-powered [in terms of the law, anyway....] In the first 5 months of having my licence I was pulled over 5 times. Seriously, it was like they had me on a roster system. I was never fined for anything although on 3 occassions I was told they were going to "take me off the road".

Not once had I done anything to "deserve" being pulled over.

From this I learned two things:

    1. "P" does not = "Probationary". "P" = "Persecuted"
    2. Removing P plates can lead to less attention; after 5 months, I took mine off, permanently. I wasn't pulled over again for several years.

Basically, cops like to pick on new / young drivers. They can do this on the premise that they're "trying to save lives" -> and there might be some justification in this. That doesn't mean its fair or equitable though.

If I were on P's now, and wanting to drive my TT, I'd get an engineers cert re: power and compliance, and would carry a copy of the act in the glovebox. If questioned, I'd produce the paperwork and mention my uncle, the lawyer, who checked it all for me and said it was ok. In Mr Policeman's brain a big sign reading "WARNING: EXCESSIVE PAPERWORK" will light up, most likely result in a positive outcome. Of course, this is predicated on the car actually being legal :)

A friend of mine has actually done that.. His dad is a lawyer and

he has proof that his car is legal etc.. lots of paper work as you stated and hasn't heard back from the cops since and hasn't received anything else about paying the fine.. I think they have realised if they let him off in the court which they know they can not win the case, they would have to re-pay every single owner of a 180sx sr20det who has been charged for driving an overpowered car.

This wouldn't work for a 300zx though as they arn't legal to start off with.

p.s I wouldn't drive around these days with no p-plates. It's 3 points for that offence now which is a load of bullshit as it has nothing to do with your driving.
