WOKBURNER Bringer of fun and mayhem

True Zedaphobic, but being a 35 eyar old car enthusiast doesnt mean I am a criminal. I will happily cop a defect if something is wrong with my car (or if I have carried out a traffic offence), but what I wont cop and yet have had to here in NSW and VIC is abusive behaviour towards me, the passengers of my vehicle and the vehicle itself. I am never a smart arse to the cops, nor do I drive like a tool, (they are doing a job) but some of the behaviour I have witnessed and been victim to because I drive a modified vehicle is unsatisfactory.

    1. Victoria - near Macdonalds in Acland St St Kilda - 5 years ago - an officer who was runnning short of defect options, physically manhandled my drivers seat till it broke.
    2. NSW - Great Western Hwy - I was victim to a female Hwy patrol officer that walked around my car and bashed her torch against it and the panels in a tyre kicking sort of fashion. Till I asked her to stop or she could pay for the damages.
    3. NSW - Great Western Hwy - I was treated like a drug dealer and had my car defect for doing 5 kms over the speed limit. I was speeding fair enough, but give me the ticket and defect and get on your way. Dont search me like a crim and treat me like dirt.

If I treat people in my job the way I have been treated on numerous occassions by highway officers/police I would be on a charge and out of a job!

On the other hand I have met those officers, Ie 2 weeks ago who are polite and do realise we are just people going about our lives also. If you are a smartarse or being a tool you deserve it, but leave the rest of us alone.

Acutally the issue has nothing to do with the fuel. As some vehicles run a MAP sensors, so the ECU only measures the air at the manifold. The reason is that the crankcase vents to the turbo intake on boost. As such the BOV will vent the crancase to atmosphere.

    Kanzen MUDA DA!

Out of my years of driving, havent encountered any problems with the police.
Been pulled over a couple of times for random breathtesting/"what are you doing up this time of morning?" show them my work shirt and be on my way lol

Borrowed the car off my bro once, was pulled over that night by the cops and they (one male and one female cop) were actually impressed with the car, saying they dont see 300zxs everyday, "a shame about the panel damage, you getting that fixed?" and asked if I was running BOVs, said no, which is true, just running recirc.

And then they went on their merry way, I see alot of SKYRINES and various holden v8s defected over here in WA, havent seen a single Z car defected to date, yeah boi!

    Exactly my point Dave.
All the hysteria about venting unburnt fuel from the BOV's is completely erroneous.:)

Yes a few bad apples spoils it for all. However don't judge all police on the short comings of a few, cause we seem to hate the fact that they may judge all of us on the bad behaviour of a few. Maybe we're even.

If you want to have a vent on what has hapened to you, by all means it's a public forum and I reckon most of us can sympathise with you. But I think making random supposition about what police can and can't do doesn't help anyone. How many of you have actually contacted the police in relation to the unjust you have received.

If you don't like be hassled by the cops I suppose you can always buy a corolla or a camry, at least the cops have enough mechanical knowledge to know the difference between them and a 300ZX.

It's a real world out there and life's not fare.

    Lol!

Who said that fuel would be pissing out the BOV??

It WILL make a AFM car run rich, no two ways about it. You have the springs in your BOV too loose and it will stall your engine.

Lets put it this way. THE BOV and/or factory recirc valve is in the intake "WELL BEFORE" the fuel injectors.
A BOV will bever leak unburnt fuel into the atmosphere at the BOV itself.
In a vehicle with an AFM for measuring airflow, the injectors are fired by calculating throttle, RPM and airflow (AFM).
If some air is lost from the intake system somewhere between the AFM and engine (lets say by a BOV releasing some air), then there will be less volume of air in the intake system than is registered by the AFM.
As a result, the ECU will still inject the fuel, based on the metered amount of air that was measured.
Less air for the original calculated amount of fuel = a rich mixture momentarily, and although there may be no unburnt fuel shooting out the exhaust, depending on how rich the mixture goes, there will most likely be some "incompletely burnt fuel", (NOTE puff of smoke between changes).
So this in itself may technically be a polutions/emmission thing.

Not so fast my good man!

Dave's point - it is the crankcase that is vented

Lloyd's point - clean pressurised air is vented (just like your tyres)

Lloyd's claim - those two points are exactly the same. (emphasis added)

...errr been breathing a bit too much crankcase air have we old mate?

As for me, it was a throwaway line that I read somewhere. Happy to be corrected on the unburnt fuel issue, very interested in the technical stuff from Chris and Greg which seems to confirm my understanding the matter has some pollution related issues, but I fail to see any hysteria, unless contrived hysteria counts.

    Dude..

    1. Cops don't/shouldn't judge, their job is to know the law and cite those who break it and back it up with proof. Judging is the job of the courts. Since some modifications to cars are illegal they should know what they are to identify them, its obvious most cops dont know, they shouldn't guess. They should be educated and have to have enough knowledge and experience (perhaps a ticket of some sort) to make these calls.

    2. You go onto say that as we drive zed this some how justifies them in targeting us as opposed to corolla/camry drivers? usually in a democracy all the citizens are equal in the eyes of law. Thats blantant profiling, a form of discrimination, which leeds to harassment. Are these the qualities you want to enstill in law enforcement?

    3. The worlds not fair... Agreed it's not. But cops should be fair and equitable, they are in the justice business its a requirement of the job. They have to deal with alot of societies dregs who are a small minority of the total population, are you saying that justifies them treating all other citizens like crap if they want to out of spite?

I know of a few people i grew up with in their 20's-30's who are cops or aspire to be and frankly it scares the crap out of me they were accepted and trained. They are mainly all in it for power, thrill of the chase, to lean/bully people, to make themselves feel tough/big, most these people usual end up there as they fall out of other work, ie they dont have the brains/skills required to work as a professional or in a trade, they get bounced out, float around a bit, go from shitty job to shitty job and get sick of it and join the cops as a backstop measure.

    Hang on a tick Barry.
Your "throw away line" was incorrect(as you readily admit)and, coming as it did from a Moderator with a respectable knowledge of things Zed, it was quickly taken up by another member(yellow_300zx)as factual.

My correcting of that mistaken comment was not a jab at you, merely an attempt to rectify a regular misconception.

All would have been fine, until Dave mentioned crankcase ventilation(which I had overlooked)but his initial sentence supported the fact that there is no fuel content(burnt or otherwise)in that expelled air(and as such, was exactly what I had said).

Enter Chrispy, who demands to know "Who said unburnt fuel came via the BOV's?".

My response was that it came from your post(and others in the past). To have said otherwise would have opened up a brawl about dishonesty and conspiracy(which was quickly eluded to by BB, of course).

As for the "hysteria" comment, I did not say that there was hysteria on this thread. I was eluding to the "tree huggers", car-haters, some Police, and a great many so-called car experts, who regularly beat this drum whenever they want to find justification for restricting the use of motor vehicles for sport and enjoyment.

It's about time people on this forum stopped taking themselves too seriously(me included).:p

Yep they have to by law or is isent imissble as evidence, even in the shopping centres they have signs up if you are being recordered, same as speed camera's they have to have warnings also. Might be different in different states though.

Yeah in NSW you can if they didn't have signs up warning you there was a speed camera :) , not sure about QLD though :p

I tried that when I Was getting hassled by the police, he tried to pull me a side (was in my parents car at the time, just a BMW) had my gf with me, said naw I want a witness to hear it all, he said threatend to charge her for interferring... this was a car he pulled over, with me and her in it... also witnesses across the road hear this and started coming over, they threatend them to stay where they were or they would arrest them for interferring in police business.... after I refused multiple times I was then threatend (After asking for his badge number and he refused) to leave I have 45 seconds before I get fined for loitering....

Btw pretty sure that seat thing is a load of shit, all seats even new have a tiny bit of play unless they are full solid 1 piece race ones. They are adjustable ffs of course they will have play, unless its MASSIVE then no its not a defect.

Raheen, I don't want to get into an argument over this and I am responding to correct what you are indicating what I have said. You are generalising with nothing to justify or back-up what you are saying, your choice, however I don't agree with it but you can still say it. Your last paragraph is just one example of this.

Refering to point no1 in your reply, I think you have misread what I said because your reply refers to police being judges yet what I was refering to was people judging people at face value.

Point 2, nowhere did I refer to anyone having justification to do anything. I would offer that the fact we are targeted is because we fall into a group. Unfair, probably, and for the same reason is why they don't target camry's or corolla's. However I think we can rule out spite as the main motivation to target us.

Point 3. If we never do anything illegal do you think the police would be targeting our type of cars, and if young people weren't dying regularly in cars would they target young drivers. Again why don't they target camry's, because most camry drivers generally behave on the roads. Maybe not the fairest way to target law breakers but have you got a better way. Maybe we should introduce yearly inspections by mechanic, would that keep you happy, that way you can slip the guy some money so he won't see your BOV's and pod filters. It would be nice to live in a perfect world, but it's not. So people are always going to break the law and police are always going to target them.

The reason I bought a zed instead of a camry is so I can drive around under the speed limit and obey all the road rules and make the roads a safer enviroment for all road users. How about you? Perhaps a camry would be more suited for this purpose. For sale one zed, will swap for camry, corolla or similar. OK I have decended into sarcasm, can we close this post now.
