Not necessarily Josh Bearing failure may produce excessive load = belt squeal; stator failure similar symptoms, but still charging, for a while at least. It may just be a slipping p/s belt... or a symptom of p/s pump failure... all guesses via the 'net.
Easiest way to diagnose belt squeal is to spray some water on the belts with a hose and the noise will dissapear for a bit and then come back when the water has flicked off.
Mmm. How's your power steering fluid level going? When I did my NA PS swap, with not enough fluid in the pump because it hadn't been bled yet it makes a very loud noise. Check your PS fluid level. If it's low jack the front end up, and fill the reservoir and turn the steering wheel from lock to lock a few times. Then refill as necessary. :zlove:
oh thats how you do it properly lol when i first got my zed, PS squeeled like a bith when turning at low speeds and you could hear air bubbles when turning just after start up. Topped up and all ok now Good to know how you're meant to do it to get the air out though.
When I first put the 4AGE in my 86 had a similar problem The bearings in the altinator ceased, causing the altinator to stop causing the belt to slip MASSIVELY (easier to spin belt than turn altinator) Long story short got the altinator re-built and all good since then! Did you soak the altinator in WD40 before you turned the car over? (apparently thats what they need after sitting on a dock for a year, lol!)
see mickey - this wouldn't happen if it was an NA just joking mate - should be fine, considering the work thats gone into your zed something like this will happen. no stress!!
You're funny Mike... That fact you've mentioned turbo, and pulling the engine out :bash: As other have said, sounds like a slipping belt, easy fix.
The Power steering pump will squeal like a bitch if it not getting enough fluid. The rotor inside the pump has veins, which are slotted into the rotor itself, when you put your foot down the veins move out and away from the rotor toward the pump housing, if the fluid is low or for some reason the pump is not getting enough fluid, the veins rub against the housing, and make the loudest worst noise imaginable, my money is on the pump.
Take it back to your mechanic... lol Can never get the right tension unless they are overtight when installed (which I don't like doing). Come up on Monday and I'll retension them Mike.
It's funny, the blue Gates racing belts are cheaper than the Bosch at Supercheap at the moment. I think they are trying to promote it as a new product line or something cause they are normally quite a lot more I think.
cant take it back it you cant drive it.. anyway problem solved... the starter motor was only just bolted on and gears werent meshing and crunching something chronic.. not a nice sound
Not properly no. It was a little more than finger tight on the nut that goes on the stud, and the bolt that holds the other side had fallen out. So the whole assembly was pivoting around the stud. Fixed that up, gave the Z some more power steering fluid because that was basically empty, and she's all good again.
Yup It was the starter motor the whole time, at least the others heard it make a terrible sound, was not cool, but yeh all fixed now, she's running a ok *takes a sigh of relief and a chill pill* :bash: :zlove: Big thanks to the boys who came over today
