Wanted to do something a bit different with my timing covers, so I attempted to smooth them out. Started off with this. Took the "heat sink" look lines off the face then sanded it. I used wayyy to low of a grit sand paper with this step as you can see. Covered up the lines with some putty. More sanding. Slapped on some flat black to get an idea of what it'd look like. Decided to putty up some of the other holes for a cleaner look. Sanded some more, was happy, so put some plastic primer/high fill on to prepare for paint. However still some imperfections came through... Can kind of see them with the flash on. So put some more putty on... Sanded yet again... And hit it with some LP2 (Midnight Purple). But all the patch work I did was clearly visible under the paint. Unsure why this happened, it wasn't visible through the plastic primer. Wasn't happy, but wanted to clear coat them and hope it cover the patch job... It did Looks great so far, gonna wet sand it back and clear coat it again for a perfect finish. In total I shaved the 4 PTU mounts, the heat sink lines and four of the mounting holes. Very happy with the results, but spent way too much time and effort on plastic covers haha :zlove:
Get some high build primer and smooth it after. Then 3 coats of paint and clear as many times as you would like. I have about 72 hours of work into my smoothed timing covers on mine. It's a lot of work but great in the end
sweet man thats the same as i've done with mine except i've chopped off the bottom sections and lower inside bolt bosses so i can remove and install the covers without taking off the coolant hardpipes. i only unbolt 3 of the intake pipes and carefully squeeze the covers on.
This sounds like only a good idea, I'm planning on doing this in future - are you able to see any of the cuts?
I've done the mod on another set of covers, only reason I'm not doing it is because I really doubt I'll be constantly pulling everything off.
Downside is that shit can get in, not a big chance but if the mod isn't worthwhile for me anyway, I'd rather not.
Ate my own words here, did the mod and the result is great, totally hidden when installed, glad I did it before I bolted them on.
Wow, it looks pretty awesome. You had patience, and you put a lot of effort in that just like you should. Thanks for sharing, it looks good.
Arent you concerned about the bog contracting and cracking with the heat and being plastic, contracting/moving etc? Sorry to be a stickler...
