It came up during a rwc. The starter motor is loose. I found one bolt so far and tried tightening it up and it must be threaded inside because it keeps turning. I took the bolt out and the bolt was okay but there was some tape, like teflon tape around the end of it. Someone has obviously tried to fix it before. I'm thinking of getting some locktight. It's pretty oily under there too so maybe a degrease and a hose and wait for a day for it to dry out? Does anyone have any better suggestions? Thanks.
Yep. Go get yourself a helicoil kit. Not cheap, but well worth it. Its used for replacing threads when they are stripped. Its the correct way to fix it. Bog or tape is just plain wrong. Locktight will only hold a bolt in a good thread from comming undone. Fix it properly
This is really common. If you're not comfortable heli coiling it yourself get a thread repair guy to come out and do it. Won't cost a whole lot if you do all the prep etc yourself.
Thanks for the advice guys. I guess it will be done properly. I will check with the guys doing the rwc and see if they do it too.
Just watch them and you'll learn how its done so you'll know in the future. Also makes sure they do it properly.
It really isn't hard to install a helicoil. I've re-done my TPS, and a heap of other parts. If you have a drill, a steady hand and a helicoil kit, it's a walk in the park. The hardest part is getting the tap started. The finished thread is actually stronger than the parent metal, so if you are doing it, do both for ultimate peace of mind.
Are you sure it's not the long bolt that has a nut on the back of it and the nut is missing? Mines missing...
Dude, I will have a look. So far I have only been able to find one bolt. There is a bit of a space there that a nut and washer might just slot into. Is that what you mean? Then a shaft that the rest of the bolt goes into. I figured that the shaft is threaded.
LOL. That's unfortunate. So how long is the long bolt and how long is the short bolt? The one I am talking about I can put a socket on from the side and it's the one under the starter motor. Thanks.
hey don't steal my picture That happened about 7 months ago and I used loctite to fix it, just 2 weeks ago it came loose again and had to be loctited up again, I will be getting it fixed properly soon but if you need a short term fix loctite works
Noticed what looked like a missing bolt (lower mount) on the starter motor. The car was going in to have rear bushes fitted so l asked them to check what was needed. I wasn't sure if it was a threaded hole or not. When l picked up the car they just told me it was sorted. Was it a bolt or a "nut and bolt", the answer was just "YES"
