Nope, not yet. Need to start borrowing & swapping out parts.

shoot me your address, PTU is a simple matter of getting it re-directed to you. Dont think its been mailed yet. If it works, option there to have it for what i paid for it. Was only to be a spare.
Can send CAS during the week if you want.

With regard to buzzing noise, my other NA Auto is doing the same thing. Not present with throttle bodies closed, but comes on and increases in pitch to WOT. No idea what it was, but car still started fine (apart from bent rod and failed injector).

i think it may be ptu. my car had exact same problem last year. exactly. i had s2 ptu aswell. got a new one ..... and bang, kicked her in the guts and she fired up. and never happened again. good luck mate

My TT auto had a buzzing noise like that although from memory it went away with foot on throttle. Hasn't had the noise since it got an engine rebuild.

It's also a pig to start, although my problem might be different to yours. I need to use WOT and heaps of cranking and then idles like a pig with lots of misfiring. Once engine is operating temp it starts first go. The strong smell of fuel has me suspecting injector o-rings/fuel rail.

...And yet you continue to run it!??? :bash: Fix your fuel leaks!

might be of interest but my friend had the buzzing noise on his TT auto after plenum off, it is one of the solonids in the gear box we readjusted his TPS to .42 and this cured it. it only did it when tps voltage was out hope this helps out with the buzzing noise as was really loud

Wow! Now that's awesome help that's offered there! Great work OZX_320, and hope it works, or helps narrow it down more for you Jonno. Some awesome, helpful people on here! :zlove:

    UPDATE 05/07/10:

Car still has a mind of its own. Will start fine for a day or two, then play dead for a week. Michael (OZX_320) was kind enough to send me his spare CAS, but no change so that can be eliminated.

To deepen the wounds, my daily run about car was stolen from my driveway during the early hours of Sunday morning. It was parked right next to the Z, but that wasn't touched (not that it would go anywhere anyway!). So now I have to buy another car pronto :(

    UPDATE 08/07/10:

I had today off work & spent (wasted) more time with the Z. I am truly lost at what to do & where to look now.

    Things I have done:

    • Checked ECU for error codes
    • Replaced injector o-rings
    • Bypassed FPCU
    • Tried a different tune
    • Swapped out injectors
    • Checked fuel pressure (tad over 40psi during crank)
    • Checked battery
    • Installed copper spark plugs
    • Tried another CAS
    • Tried another series 2 PTU
    • Checked spark
    • Checked ECU is receiving start signal on pin 43
    • Checked ECU plug is connected correctly
    • Tried starting with AFM disconnected

I have pretty much done everything I can possibly think of & I'm exhausted, confused and depressed that I have not got any closer to sorting out this issue I've had since March.
If I was asked to guess what the issue is, I would say it is over fueling. Why though I wouldn't be able to answer. Also why it is intermittent I do not know.

I think I'm at the giving up stage :(

Have you tried another CTS? An erratic cts will cause various problems including overfuelling.

Stay @ it. Think of how many things you have eliminated!

I can't remember (& there is soo much to read here) did you do a compression test?

Surely someone can jump on a plane & go for a look? fricken long way for me to go & expensive :(

I wonder if the injectors are dumping a load of fuel into the engine and quenching the spark.

CAn you try putting a fuel pressure guage on and see how long it takes for the fuel pressure to ebb away?

It should hold pressure for quite a few hours. If it drops away over say 5 mins. You found the problem.

    Graham,
The fuel pressure will drop but not straight away. It will hold 20 or more psi for days. It won't be the injectors themselves at fault (seeing as I have swapped out a set with no change). I disconnected the fuel pump to test the spark & the engine was popping and almost starting, so there was a lot of fuel in there.

    Mark,
No I haven't tried another CTS. That is something I will do.

    Glenn,
I was going to test comp today, but my mate forgot his gauge. That said, very doubtful it is to blame seeing the problem is intermittent.

i know u said u bypassed the fpcu but try putting another known working fpcu and try it again....

the only time my car broke down sounds exactly like this. may not be but thats the symptoms i had. i bypassed the fpcu still acted the same. i chucked in another known working fpcu and the problem was gone... duno why but it was...

worth giving it a shot to rule it out

Have you swapped out the ECU? Maybe worth a shot.

I can 100% say the o-rings are not leaking. I have put two new sets on the Nismo 555cc injectors & when I put the stock injectors back in, I replaced the o-rings again.
I also pressure tested the rail when it was exposed (pics from my phone).

This is how I tested/checked the spark.

Chad, from what I can gather (someone tell me if I'm wrong) if the FPCU is faulty there won't be significant fuel pressure. The problem you experienced was probably due to not enough fuel. Mine seems to be the opposite.
