I am so tired. We got home at 5.45 after racing most of the day.

It was really a baptism of fire as far as a first track day for me was concerned.

    Winton is so tight.

I went for a first few laps with an instructor which was an bloody good idea. His second race lap was a 1min 52. Then he let me have a go. First a 1.57. Then next session a 1.54 then a 1.52 and lastly a 1.50.08. :) Better each session.

Finished in 21st spot and after a bit of a dig around found out the top 15 cars where running Rcomps which made me feel a lot better.

Gonna pull the slicks off the track car for Sandown on the 17th of Novenber and stick em on the road zed.

The zed has so much power I found that I was being held up by a lot of cars which didnt help my times. So toward the end I made sure I was first out on the track so i didnt have to pass them.

Hit 185 down Wintons short straight which was the only time I spent in 4th gear (2 sec's)

The stock brakes with the QFM A1RM pads and Penright SIN brake fluid are awesome. I had zero fade the whole day.

The instructor reckons the car was capable in the current trim of doing a 1.47

I managed to hit some parts of each lap perfect but let myself down on other parts. And of course that changed each lap. Need to string a heap of good parts together to get it right.

Lastly to all those people who harp on about the 2 seater having too snappy handling. BULLSHIT.

Around the top hairpin which is a second gear corner i could hold a drift almost all the way around it and the handling was extremely predicatable.

The Eibachs, AGX's and whiteline way bars are pretty damn good.

Only issue i had was how unsettled the back end could be when hard on brakes with Hicas working. IMO its fine on road cars but HAS to be pulled on track cars.

The addition of Hicas and road tyres starting to go overheat after 5 laps or so made the first corner after the short straight pretty interesting meaning you have to almost drift the rear around the corner to keep it pointing the right way.

I had a great time. Such a shame it so far away.

Pics when I wake up. Got a head ache now.

Instamatic got some great shots, and I got HD video of Diesel Dave spinning out right in front of us at the start finish line.

    What a great day !!!!

Tired and sunburnt Tekrader signing out. :bash:

Forgot to add. I had a full tank of 100 octane fuel when we got there. I did 4 sessions of 5 laps, 2 klm each and used 65 litres LMFAO. 40 klms approx. Tank was almost empty when we left.

Holy fuel consumption batman !! :D

I look forward to getting back out on the track again (Symmons Plains)

    It is very addictive :)

How many race tracks are in the area you can gain access to? There are only two in Tas, one north (Symmons Plains), one south (Baskerville).

    :worthless:

    My new project.

used my road car today though

You can tell how much heavoer the road car is by how it is to tow. Road car is a heavy pile of crap compared to track car.

Just got home my self. at 9pm, (due to a tyre on the trailer throwing the tread :vomit: luck the Xtrail's spare fitted sort of).
Looking forward to my spin in hollywood style, I did it on purpose for the crowd ;)
Managed a 1.49 in the end, still struggling with it. and Chris said we managed a 210 down the main straight so we are getting there. A lot of sorting out still to do. But at least in the last session managed not to spin, and finally starting to sort out the flat shifting.
Mind you I had a right foot clutch change (yes that is correct, I was left foot braking at the time, brainfaid) on the 1.49 too, work that out :confused:
Glad you had a good time. Track days are so much fun, and I really enjoy the way the Tamper guys run them.
You missed Instamatic who got out on the track.
Great day, bit disappointing that I still have this high temp issue. But I think we have the culprit identified now and I have a look at those idlers you suggested this week.
Like wise I'll post pictures tomorrow when I not wrecked.

It was a great day and although I didn't originally plan on doing so I'm glad I took my car out on the circuit later in the afternoon. Only managed to get in ten laps within the couple of hour or so I signed up for, but it was interesting to get an idea of what the stock NA is capable of... which isn't much :p

With a bit more practice I could probably drop my 1:59 PB down to the low to mid 1:50s, but I'd say that'd be about the limit of my car in its current form. Something's wrong with the tune, it hits 90 degrees and then it starts to detonate a bit and having to swap a hot lap for a cool one every so often gets a bit annoying after a while.

Still, I'm impressed by the potential of the car. A decent tune and perhaps some weight reduction and I'll be laughing.

Sorry to hear about the trailer Dave! Did you have much trouble changing the tyre? I should've tailed you on the way back man, sorry :(

Do you need a secondary bonnet restraint for these events? Any other scrutineering requirements?

When is the next event at Winton?

And just for fun, here's a Forester GT that was ripping it up. First time I've ever seen a Forester on the track, but it certainly was a nice change from all the Evos and Fords

That rear fin is staying, You wanna see the bend it sets at 160klms +

It is doing a great job. I am sure the rear end would feel even lighter if it wasnt there.

Dunno WTF racing line I was taking here ?????:confused::confused::confused:

Had a bit of trouble getting that corner right.

That is at the end of the fast straight. I just couldnt judge the distance properly coming down from 170klms/hr. Always seemed to overshoot and crowd myself at the entry.

The brake had more to go I just didnt stand on them enough

    Good Stuff

Graham, good to see some more track whores out there.
get yourself some R- comps and your times will come down.
wouldn't be without my wing on the track either, plenty of down force needed.
get your times to Fleet for inclusion on the track records list, gives others something to aim for whenever they venture there.

I will fit up the Hoosier slicks and wheels off the track car for Sandown in a few weeks. That should be fun. ;)

They are brand new but i am not sure how old they are. Could be good or very bad.

Jenny was in charge of the photos. Got to send her on a course me thinks.

Here is the 1 good one

I will download the video and see what thats like.

Diesel looooong write up and pictures

Another day at the Winton Raceway. Having a real plan of what I wanted to achieve again, meant that we needed an early start. After a couple of issues the previous day, I need not mention here.
The absolute priority one for the day was to take my lovely wife around for a couple of laps in the car. The other aims were technical; I wanted to really start tuning the suspension, especially the turn in as it had significantly different understeering effect compared to the road car, and still working on the car getting hot issue. Amongst a few other things.
Also, since I was tuning the suspension I wanted to make sure that the car was balanced so I ensured that I had a passenger each time ;)
First session, with my lovely wife as a passenger. The technical?s; had 4 degrees of negative camber on the front and 6mm of toe-in, why it is a known starting point. Well noting it was my wife?s first time on a track and in the track car, (talk about thrown in the deep end) I said I start slow and speed up. I think my version of slow differs to hers, as she let me know that this is not slow. The problem with going slow on a track is that you inclined to be out of whack with the torque range of the engine and the turbos will be cutting in and out of boost. Well it happened within a lap I spun it, right in front of everyone coming pass the timing point (I aim to entertain). No damage a nice slow spin off into the inner field though. I was worried that I would be dealing with my wife screaming ?GET ME THE HELL OUT OF THIS THING!!!?. But, she was pretty calm and I was the one that was wound up?? Want to see the spin, thanks to my precise positioning just about everyone got a look, picture and video (clicky). Got going again but increased a notch, and had no further issues for the session, except for the climbing temp. Mind you I think she was impressed with the speed it had. Best lap time 1.58.
We measured the tire temps on the way to the pits. These suggest that we needed greater toe-in (more???). Oh well, lets give it a go. Put 2mm more one, and went out with my brother Craig, first timer again, for session two.
Session two. The handling went to hell, I mean it didn?t drop a little it went to rubbish. I was fighting like crazy to get the car to steer. So I just concentrated on my lines, and giving my brother a fun ride, full power runs on the straights. A bit of drifting action, so it was inevitable that we spun. Slow corner in second gear, was going to clutch in and drift off the track, but thought he?ll love this?..So I jammed the right foot in and smoked?em up. I think he enjoyed that. Best lap 1.53, hmmm not making sense.
Session three. Put my good mate Chris in this time, he helped all day and was great in the pits. This time Zero toe-in. Heaps better handling, no spins. Still needs work, especially my driving. Doing some left foot braking, and go all confused and went for the clutch pedal with the right foot ????. And, dumber still managed to get my foot caught in between the brake and throttle. I am happy to admit I am not a professional driver, let just say that Mark Webber need not be concerned. Started to build a bit of speed, before the temp started to climb again, and I came in. 1.52 lap (WTF seems the more I goose it up the faster I get????). But, there is heaps in it as we were getting just over 200km/hr on the main straight, apparently that is what Chris was screaming as we hit the braking zone.

Session four last one for the day. Decided to try toe out of 2mm, just to see what happened. Didn?t feel too much different, didn?t push hard. Spent a few laps just ?cruising? around, enjoying the driving. 1.49. What the??? I think that is telling me something.

    Pictures.

    Promise you?ll go slow

Apply a little throttle, and it is a text book job
    [IMG]

Just a little drift I?m looking cool

I meant this power slide I?ve got it.

    This is recoverable

    I'm in total control honey?.

    Ummmmm

    Oh there you all are

In addition found out as we were packing up that we didn?t have the ride heights setup the same left to right, so need to make sure that is right next time ( jack the car?s suspension up to get the car on/off the trailer) and drop it at the track. Just check the picks and you can see.
Fantastic to catch up again with everyone. Great fun day, well done again to the Tampered motorsport guys for a professional, relax, and most importantly friendly, day. That?s about all until next time???
No that ?s all that happened?..
Sure?..Can?t think of anything else interesting that occurred??.
Oh alright?I?ll admit it this is what happens to your tow vehicle when you don?t connect the trailer to the tow ball correctly.

I say again, I?m a goose. (lucky no damage to E-Vade, but I am never going to live down the ribbing from the wife).
