Okay i can understand your train of thought etc on retrograding the z32 with a more modern engine, but for all the issues, little fiddly stuff arounds, hiccups, plus the certification costs etc,,, why not just buy a z34 ? And then no issues to worry about, no drama's .

I was actually offered a cammed motor for it, only downside was that it needed a Power FC and tune :(

Nope not going to fit without a LOT of work and a LOT of money and also a LOT of smart.

The variable cam actuator gear on the back of the heads is a seriously large bit of kit that will force the engine about 100mm further forward in the engine bay at least.

The front sump issue is not easily sorted as it's a cast sump and has oil galleries incorporated in it, also some of the mounts for accessories will be part of the sump.

Anything can be done with the right amount of money etc but fitting a VQ37VHR in a Z32 will likely cost as much as just buying a going 370Z.

speak to ezzupturbo...............he has had two differet z32's running with a single turbo vq35 engine in them.

fits well, standard bonnet etc etc if i remember it all correctly.

and the 350z motor would be a heap cheaper as well, plus theres the single turbo option.

    rather a vg than a vq ;)

Well the motor got built, but then ran out of money to fit it. Also in hindsight it was a ridiculous idea.

Often they are the best ones :D

As long as you can get it done that is

biggest problem with VQ is that the only configurations are front sump and that the oil filter is integral to the sump, this means several high pressure oil galleries running through the sump and difficult to reliably/cheaply reroute or ake custom sump

John from UAS just went dry sump on his VQ30/Vq35 dett.. which is the ideal maneuver as this deletes all of the clearance positioning issues and the motor will fit easily

Ezzupturbo just Butchered the crossmember and shifting the steering rack making bump steer diabolical.. theoretically "fit" but completely unusable for anything other than static photos

i fit a vq35 to my engine with 6-speed.. will fit in front sump configuration but clearances are tight as engine designed to fit with cyl 1-4 over the front cross member centreline, vg designed for cyl 3&4 to sit behind this line

vq's have much better cyl head port designs, and vq37dett is my ultimate goal for my 300.. but best option is to wait till i have the coin for a dry sump and vq37's are cheaper

    I noticed this.
the vq looks like its almost hard up against the radiator in the 300's. The vg isnt a small engine itself but its probably safe to say the vq will definately be a tighter fit...

I disagree with what some of you are saying about cams making no difference.. theres a lot of 300 vids with people claiming they have a 'nice sounding' Z and doing standing starts..

The majority of Zs on YouTube sound terrible.. and the good ones are always built with 500 cams. Definately is a big difference to idle and the precision when it revs out with upgraded cams over stock..

It might sound the same at steady idle depending on what exhaust they run but not once you give it some throttle open...

so your happy to stay with a vg as long as it has a lumpy idle ?

Rate he's going getting a lumpy idle won't be a problem haha

    Lumpy idle?

Are you saying running r5 cams will give you lympy idle?

I thought you were all just trying to tell me there was no difference between stock vg30's and cammed vg30's. ..

Im beginning to doubt the info I get from this forum -_-

it is starting to sound unviable with the feedback in this thread..

I was thinking it might be cool to have a 300 and a 370 in a garage one day both running the same running gear.. and owning a retrofit 300.

Might be 'back to the old drawing board' for ideas then..

Easiest way to do this is a VQ35HR with VQ37 crank, rods and pistons.

The VQ35 and VQ37 are the same block.

Using a VQ35HR donor means you don;t have the VVEL actuators which raise the height of the engine at the rear by ~4" and that won;t fit under your bonnet.

The biggest problem with these engines is DBW throttles which is going to give you an ECU problem as using a HR model 350Z ECU in a 300 means figuring out how to tell it that it is not in a CAN based 350Z anymore.

Other option is an aftermarket ECU but you need DBW control which means Haltech ELite or Motec M130+.

Otherwise, go back to cables to pull the TB ....... or stick with a DE engine which is a bit simpler.

Is doable, but won't be simple
