Bloody excellent descriptions there Ross. Thanks for that! Hmmm. Now, my zorsts are of the 3" variety, and originally came off a TT. Bad? Sounds expensive
twin 3" system is not optimal for a na, your exhaust gases will never flow enough to require the size, while the size itseldf will reduce back preesure enough to sap a few kw's from your engine..... sell the exhaust to a tt owner, and abuy a exhaust in 2.25 to 2.5 diameter, which is the prefered na size for max go for from motor........
So, if I fix the cats (if that's the problem), I should be able to sell the 3" exhaust, and then afford the 2.5" without an issue. So, if that's the problem, I may have a 3" twin 'set' for sale. Once it's off the ground, quick to diagnose the problem, or does it have to come off the car to see properly? I do have a mallet, that's no issue. Getting it up without ramps is the issue - all zed owners know that.
ok , so heres what you do to check the cats.... raise car so you can see cats, bash with hammer, if it sounds like a sand in a coke can or similar, then the biscuit inside is broken and the cat will need to be replaced........the cats in my car are shagged, ill rattle them for you on the tech day so you can hear the sound of crappiness for yourself lol.... you cant fix a cat, you replace them with new ones..... wether your cats are broken or not, ditch the exhaust, its hurting your cars performance, and in the case of a na with a big exhaust its gonna be hurting it quite a bit......
Ok, just checked it out. The exhaust end (Cannons??) are just over 100mm, so 4". I reached under and the pipe near the gearbox is about 2", so it's not exactly what I thought. In this instance it sounds like it may be good news, i.e. cheaper.
the pipe that is around 2"'s will be the stock exhaust..... the "tips" or 4 inche pipes you mentioned are just the very exit of the exhaust, to measure your exhaust diameter measure just behind the rear mufflers, where the back seat is..... all the info you are providing leads me to beleive you ahve whats called a "cat back" exhaust, which means that the origianl cats are still in place but everything behind it has been changed for a more performance orientated system, common mod, but does mean your cats will be 20 odd years old lol!! overdue for replacement big time..... i will get under your car and tell you brand, type and diameter of your entire exhaust at the tech day ok dave, removes any issues, and you can decide where to go with new/ replacement parts form there
Again, 2" Cool, thanks Ross. What's the cost of the new Cats going to be? Time to start searching I suppose...
Aww crap. Ok, so after only 2 months the zed hits my wallet. Had to happen sooner or later I spose. :zlove: And this is hopefully the bad news. "Hopefully"
yeah 300 a pair best case but for good ones that i would use on my car, 5-600 is the going rate as 300zxc said
And, I can get the cats from EBay for $180 each + $20 (each I suppose) shipping. http://cgi.ebay.com.au/200-CPSI-MET...s=66:2|65:15|39:1|240:1318|301:1|293:1|294:50 I wonder if I go to a muffler shop if they can tell me if the cats are rooted? I have a muffler place 5 minutes drive from here.
wouldnt touch a cat from ebay.. likely to be shit and more than likely not meet legal standards didnt know the dumps were infront of the cats now...
Have a look here. http://www.aus300zx.com/forum/showthread.php?t=286045 The group buy is over but the normal price is still very good at around $230 each I believe. I've just fitted mine to my car last week and am very happy with the result. They gave my car a slightly meaner tone, and seat of the pants feels a little more responsive but that part could be in my head Ben
mowww. Notice there is no "e" tone when the "cat" is blocked. Ha Ha, OK now to get serious. Typically I would feel the pulses coming out of the exhaust pipes on each side buy putting my hand near the exhaust. If there is a difference there is likely a blockage in the exhaust. You should clearly feel the pulses or there is a problem.
Thanks Martin. Looks like Vader is on his way to a solution for his problem so I'll bow out of his thread. I thought I was getting a handle on my problems but since posting I've had the engine steam cleaned - against my wishes - and have now got more symptoms to juggle. Cheers.
