To Smoke or Not to Smoke Rear Tailights (Pics Inside)

Well i saw a picture of a grey zed, with smoked tail lights and it looked very nice, preety mean and sleek. So i started thinking about doing it to my car...after a bit of research found out that there is spray cans, black tint which allow you to do that so it is not that hard to do. I am still undecided tho, tried a bit of photochoping to make it look 'smoked' with some sort of end result but i wanted to hear what other people think about it...like it or not

Well...i dont drive recklessly, i havent been pulled over by cops ever, no fines no nothing. Plus i have a NA so no mods to the engine, no reason to defect me, unless those dark tints are a defect themselves...

Hi,Im not saying you drive badly,its just it gives them a reason to hassle you,it looks great dont get me wrong,but the cops dont like them one little bit and believe me ,there is always something on our cars they can defect ,
Its unreal what little things they can defect,tyre placards,even not having the gearing marked on your gearknob,the list goes on and on.They can even send you to have the exhaust noise checked,even if its fine,it still costs you a booking fee and time,dont give them a reason and they wont find one i say!!,Simon (BUT IT DOES LOOK SHIT HOT !!) :zlove:

yea depends on the colour of your car IMO, I think yours should look good, I did mine and am about to do it over cos it wasn't quite dark enough.

Yes you can buy the stuff in a spray can to do this!!!......but I'm sure it's highly illegal!!!! you should check your local regs first!!
Last thing you want to do is give the 'Boys in Blue' yet another reason to pick on you!!!!

 

looks tough as i think, but had a bad experience with that spray stuff before. did ot to a set of headlight protectors on a bommadore i had as my first car. made them really brittle and they ended up cracking, might have just been the type i used though...

 

After i gave it bit more though and research i decided to buy vinyl that will do the same thing, instead of spraying. So i can remove it if i get bored of the look or if cops hassle me too much. The tail lights measure about 7"high and about 60"lenght so i know where my next hundred buks are going to... :zlove:

i'm a silver zed like yourself, i did the clear taillight conversion and that looks awesome.
i've got smoked front and side indicators, and the whole car looks awesome.
my car is now pretty much black and silver with a bit of clear.

just another combination to consider.

 

i think it would look good on a black car... but not so much on a silver car...

i think it's illegal cos you're supposed to have red diffusers on the rear of your car so when you're parked on the side of the road at night, an oncoming cars headlights will make them reflect red light. so, if their tinted too dark that won't happen. some aftermarket tail lights are illegal cos of this reason too. lots of utes do it and i have heard of them getting defected for it.

I agree dark car looks very nice silver car go full clear indicators and brake lights series 2000 style looks hot.

 

Looks good to me .. and i think it solve an issue that i

have with my clear indicators .. the chrome amber globes just do not show up sufficiently in the daylight ...

and to the point made by haylz .. would not the red reflector, built into the rear stop light, be sufficient to meet the legal requirement .. if not, i am in da pooh ...!!!!! ....

 

Baz, I think the point is that the Brake Light reflector would be covered in the tint, and therefore be less effective, possibly illegal.

 

i think you should be fine Baz, i'm sure you could charm your way out of a defect if it is illegal.... or does that only work for chicks??

 

I found a can of this stuff in Wivenhoe dam of all places... I tried it on an old indicator and it was very hard to get right, just ended up looking dodgy. It had in big letters NOT FOR ROAD USE. So I guess that answers the legal side of the question.

 

i think it looks unreal on the dark cars...........let me know how the vinyl goes i would like to see pics.........i have been wanting to do it to my black 300 for a while but i have been worried it will get defected and have to remove it.........this way i can just peel it off..............thanks

 

Just wondering how they get it so shiny? Some one is selling a tinted pair currently and it doesn't look glossy at all..

 

This thread was dead, but neway. Usually the DIY tint spray cans you can buy at supercheap and other shops, dont give you that glossy shiny look. You can buy tint vinyl, which is glossy, or get them profesionally sprayed which gives an awesome finish.
Ive changed my mind about the tint, because my car will soon be black so they will be way to much black if i do.
