I had some aftermarket front inner tie rods & outer tie rod ends, that i bought off Graham (Tekky) some time back, that i had given my mechanic to replace the original parts. However today i was informed that he is unable to fit the tie rod end as "the bolt is too small in diameter & not long enough" - anybody understand what he is talking about & able to suggest what he is doing wrong or what isnt right?

He send me the above image. He is talking about the golden/bronze coloured bolt at the end.

So did a bit of research & came across the following in case i have to get new a set & was wondering if anybody had the following setup?

SPL PRO V5 front outer tie rod ends

    +

Nissan OEM 300ZX Inner Tie Rod - Front Power Steering Rack

    OR

    TEIN Front inner tie rods
    https://www.splparts.com/store/product-info.php?pid197.html
    https://conceptzperformance.com/Cart/description.php?II=3969

Is anybody able to tell me whether the Tein front inner tie rods are actually better than the original nissan inner tie rods or is it just marketing crap?

Also anybody able to confirm if the 350z inner tie rods actually fit the 300zx? Reason i ask is because, Coz does not list the 350z inner tie rods as being compatible with the 300zx, however in the spl link above, it mentions the 350z inner tie rods, hence my query

    Thanks in advance.

Before you purchase anything, measure the size of the male thread that screws into the blue painted section.

I shall get my mechanic to measure it tommorow & ill post it here when he gets back to me

I only listed the spl rod ends & oem rods in case i have to get new ones, so if I'm able to get answers for them now, i can get them straight away rather than waiting to ask later

I just heard back from my mechanic & he measured it up for me. The measurement is "14 x 1.5 thread"

The above is the out side thread size. The inside thread is smaller which is 12 x 1.25

So does anybody know if the tie rod ends are wrong or just being installed incorrecty?

Is there a write up on how to install aftermarket front inner tie rods & front outer tie rod ends that i can pass on to my mechanic?

This is a pretty straight forward bolt on job. I'm assuming he is saying that the stud on the actual ball joint is too small and short for the mounting hole on the hub?

If that's the case the tie rod end obviously isn't the right part for the Z32 hub.

Thanks for that Mike. Ive been working every day so havnt had a chance to go check it out. I bought the parts of Tekky when he was selling off parts for his race zed build, & it is supposed to fit the zed so not sure what the issue is.

I dont think my mechanic has ever had to install aftermarket tie rod ends, so hence why I'm trying to find an install guide that he could use.

Is there any difference in how the aftermarket tie rod ends are installed compared to orm ones?

These are basic parts with a ball joint on one end and you screw it in and out on the other end.

The only difference in the aftermarket part is that it doesn't have rubber bushes and easier to adjust. If the stud is too short and too narrow in diameter there's only 2 reasons.

    A) your hub does not have a stock Z32 knuckle (highly unlikely)
    B) these tie rod ends are not for a Z32 (more likely)

Since there's heaps of S13/S14 tie rod ends out there, that's probably what you have. They will screw onto Z32 inner tie rods but are too small for Z32 knuckles since the the S13 knuckle is different.

That makes more sense to me. I'm going to go check out the zed tommorow so ill double check & if needed ill order the parts needed from Coz.

Just for future reference if anybody is after the information, i have gotten confirmation from Nick who works for Coz via email, that the z33 spl tie rod ends & z33 tein tie rods WILL work with the z32, which was why SPL had it listed like that in their website.

I was also informed of steering rack spacers that i can install at the same time which can improve the steering angle, so i might get a set of them. Ive heard that GkTech sell them as i cant find anything listed on Coz's site so might get it from GkTech unless somebody knows another place to get them

I have a feeling what you've got suit R34 skylines, have you tried PMing Tekky? He'll probably be willing and able to help

I think they are likely to be S13/ S14 as mike pointed out

They are clearly not the right size from the pic! (look way to thin in the BJ stump to start with)

A mechanic that hasn't fitted tie rods before is concerning though!

Suggest you speak to Tekky - he's a good bloke and helpful but something is amiss here - one of the parts is not the correct size (tie rod or assembly)

Ive just been to the mechanic. It was just a complete misunderstanding as he didnt explain it to me properly over the phone. He is extremely helpful & explained it all to me & took the time to show me exactly what the issue was.

SuperZ, he sure has fitted many tie rods & has plenty of experience with zeds, just a big misunderstanding as he was using different terminology.

The tie rod ends are not for the z32 knuckles but most likely for a s13, so hence why it wasnt fitting on the zed as it is just too thin.

So i am going to order the z33 tein inner tie rods & z33 SPL outer tie rod ends along with the Ingalls lower control arm ball joint while everything is off the zed, he has also put my standard front upper control arms back & removed the aftermarket ones & he is going to install the nismo bushes i got from Rob for the front end.

Thanks for all the help & suggestions & hopefully this will all be sorted in the next week or so once the parts arrive & i can finally get the zed back & take it for a drive :)

The parts where bought as Z32 parts. Have no idea why they wont fit as they did in the hubs I tried them in. Those rod ends are specially made to drop the roll centre so if you lower the car the bump steer is still within spec. In the kit I gave you there was multiple sleaves to fit depending n the lowering required. I suggest your mechanic is a dill....

You realize you have had those rod ends for over a year Abs !!! I think I also gave you the original receipt. I cant remember where I got them now. Its been 6 years since I bought them.

Graham yeah i do realise that & like many of us, we dont always install the parts straight away. It was only when the fuel pump died that i actually had the time to get a lot of things done as the zed has always been my daily so i dont get the time to get work done to it or have parts installed that i have lying around in storage

There were no sleeves, because if they were i would have given it to my mechanic to use it.

I highly doubt my mechanic is a dill considering it is Joe Imbesi & after going to check on the zed today, i can only praise the effort & time & quality of workmanship he has done & the zed is running better than it ever has, so I'm very happy with Joe's work.

Anyways it does not matter now as i have already ordered new inner tie rods & outer tie rod ends from Coz which should be getting here sometime next week.

Graham I didnt come asking for a refund or even msg you once about them, so dont stress. Its all good. Afaik it was a honest mistake & its not the end of the world. Ill just sell it to the silvia boiz so no harm done.

Yes Graham, i did look at the link & i understand what your saying. But he showed me today when i went past that the rods ends are too thin for my knuckles. Maybe because mine are non-abs knuckes, i dont know, but they sure dont fit on mine.

They do mention Z chassis, but definitely not my Z. If it fit on your race zed then it should fit on other zeds with abs knuckles. I'm no expert so can only go by what i was told & shown

    Sorry Tekky...

Have to disagree with you there..... Joe has worked on many many modded Zeds, from just basic mods to race spec. :) Not just stock Zeds.

Keep in mind, he just doesnt work on Zeds. He has worked on heaps of different Jap and Euro cars. And is now building engines and modding engines for Ferraris, Lambo's, Porsche's etc etc... He knows what he's doing.

Mark i completely agree with you. The amount of ferraris & masterati's that are being worked on every time i go past there is incredible & ive seen his work first hand & i will happily recommend him. Plus the amount of things he has fixed without even me asking him to just because it wasnt done right by the people that used to work on my zed.

He is very knowledgable & happy to take the time to explain & show what is wrong & what needs to be fixed. If only the quality of work he does was the same among everybody else that has worked on my zed.

As long as you guys are happy makes no difference to me.

Recent experience with a member I know pretty well and spent an HUGE amount of money says otherwise..

I don't know anyone else who would recommend a generic undynoed tune from HITEC Bob with a clear conscience
