Your not worried about the stock internals with that sort of boost mate?

I plan to run 20 psi on mine, although the internals are not stock :D.

    But stock should be fine.

nah im confident it will be ok, wont go above that though, the tune i have is really conservative too. heaps of fuel and a well set up FMIC so should have decent charge temps too.

What turbo's are you running Niall, stock hi flow manuals or aftermarket?

  5. rollin

    rollin First 9

yeah stock manual's with GT28RS cores; they're huge cores, similar to the GT525 in the pic here

Any chance you could get some IT temp and boost curve figures when it is dynoed? Be good to see what those cores run at temp wise in stock housings.

yeah will do, those are things i ahd wanted to check out anyway, ive always wanted to do an intercooler efficiency test since ive set mine up and a boost curve is always good to see.

maybe not on this mini dyno day, but i will get it done after

do you think that is a big downside to these turbo's? i had read little bits and pieces on the net about high turbo temps with these mainly on the exhaust side but from what i saw it was mostly conjecture aside from a few comments by Greg Dupree i think who may have backed up what he said

I dont have any hard and fast facts to back it up, but I feel the turbine wheel and housing are a gross mismatch. I dont think the scroll has enough volume to run that size exhaust wheel in its efficiency range. The stock turbine housing is alot smaller than anything offered by garrett with this size wheel. The resulting heat build up due to the lack of flow has to reduce the lifespan of the turbo. I would be suprised if they can do 20+ psi without creating high intake temps.

The cores flow almost double what the standard turbos are rated to. Surely this cant be a good match.

Have you got any maps for similar turbos? What are your thoughts on them, not drivabilty but from a mechanic's point of veiw?

Do you know if the gate size has been increased at all?

Valid points there, Im not biased towards them and i didnt put alot of research in to be honest, i got them for a price i couldnt refuse. I had orginally planned to use a set of GT28Rs's that were on a zed i wrecked but they were damaged beyond repair. So i have seen first hand the huge difference in housing size.

From what i understand 20psi is the max for these turbo's and in terms of power 300rwkw is pretty much the ceiling so that would indicate to me that this combination is fairly inefficient in terms of max power for the size of the wheels.

Having said that, my goal was to do 400whp and i belive these will get me there.

Its highly likely that turbo lifespan will be reduced in this case as you said, but being a street car id probably only do 5-8k a year in it and the majority of that is off boost driving so lifespan is not a concern.

Gate size appears to be the same but i dont think that is a problem, at the moment i have slightly weak actuators and i cant get the thing to make high boost .

I havent heard of anyone having runaway boost issues on these so im guessing the small housing chokes it down enough .

In my case time will tell and some of these questions should be answered.

    Hey Rollin!!
    Great thread mate!!!:D:D
Just wondering where about's in Bris you getting your tuning done?? I couldnt find anyone in Bris to do mine, as is still running the stock ECU. Ended up taking it done the gold coast, to some guys that do nistune. Would be good to know of some one good local.
    Cheers:D:D
    Great work!

awesome. i was actually goin to post requesting pics of all the clutch accessory stuff eg/ slave/master cylinder and hydraulic line setup and where all the stuff is routed through for the conversion. if you can help will save a heap of searchin around the web.

thanks mate, hope the rebuild goes well (im in the same vote lol)

    Benny_C About as subtle as...

Hey Niall, not only will your dyno result be great for satisfying some of your own curiosities, but it will probably be a good guage for some of the Hypergear turbos aswell, being that they are essentially stock sized housings that have been high flowed with similar spec char's, particularly the 320hp rated ones will be similar to your RS cored stockies.
I'm very eager to see your results too mate. keep up the good work :)

    BLACK BEAST SLICKTOP TT R-SPEC

20 psi will be fine with those turbos ...
I have no problem with intake temp issues..
I had 14 hard dyno runs when tuning mine at 1.4bar and mechanic was happy with my intake temps..my current smic are 200ci (not that big)

no boost creep problems with stock waste gate ports either..

    nice one.

I realised i hadnt reset the timing after i had swapped out the CAS when trying to find the cutting out problem and it was only running 8 deg of advance.

the ignition map is quite conservative in this tune so ive bumped static timing up to 17. Now its sharp as a knife, the off boost performance seemed to be a bit soggy beofre and i wasnt happy with how it went on boost.

Now it breaks traction in 2nd on 10psi and off boost performance is really good.

Only a few days till i do the actuators, cant imagine how it is going to run on 20 after seeing it go today.

    Very excited!

The power rating indicates the core and housings arent a great match.

At your goal power level, 400hp, you shouldnt be pushing them hard enugh to make an impact on thier reliability. I would think you could do 400hp with less than 20psi. I assume you gave your heads, plenums and mani's a touch up while they were off, this will help alot.

No one has a map for these turbo's?

  17. rollin

    rollin First 9

yeah i gave the heads, intake upper and lower a good work over, heavily ported th exhasut mani's and really smoothed out the outlet elbows.

  18. a2zed

    a2zed Guest

It is suprising how much meat you can take out the the stock manis, even then they are still tiny compared to ms and ams mani's.

When they're going good they go great!!!

after fixing a boost leak and setting hte timing the car is just incredible, i highly recommend these turbos.

at 11psi the performance is fantastic, easily as quick as 17psi on the old turbo's

I might senak it round to the dyno tomoro and run it now before i boost it up :D
