    BigCol That's what she said...

When you take a jpg photo...

the camera takes the raw image as obtained through the lens, then applies the settings appropriate for the camera mode you have set (ie white balance, black & white mode, sepia, vivid colour settings, save as jpg etc). This is "post processing" similar to what is done by photoshop.

RAW takes the image and stores it, AND camera mode data which allows the adjusting of all the camera's settings. This can be done in software such as photoshop (or Zoombrowser for canon owners). This is kind of a "pre-processing" stage for the image.

In theory, if the shot is taken as RAW and your skills are good enough you can get the image pretty much spot on using pre-processing. This means you don't then have to perform photoshop "post-processing" to the image to get it right. Manipulating & saving images in the "post processing" mode can lead to a muddying of the images. Not so important if you are dealing with small size images, but become a big deal when manipulating poster size prints.

Its funny when you go to these show's and some owners just think

Re: can you pls explain the whole RAW thing?

Yup, BigCol got it right. RAW is just that - a RAW dump of sensor data and camera settings, uncompressed, into your card.

A JPG is a compressed image format which is "lossy". Your camera throws away data and processes the image within the camera (applies white balance, boosts colour saturation, applies sharpening) when it saves the image to card.

Your camera should come with some RAW conversion software which is pretty basic. I use Bibble Pro to convert my RAW files. Depending on what I want to do with the image, I can output to a JPG or a TIFF (even larger uncompressed file).

You can shoot JPG if you are not going to do a lot of image manipulation or if your shots are destined to end up as web shots or little 6x4 prints. But if you are going to sell your pictures or print large you really need the extra versatility of RAW. For most casual shooters I recommend shooting JPG.
