Search this forum for "toluene" or as Shell used to call it "methyl benzene" - lots of answers to your query. I used it for years as a 25% by volume mix with super grade fuel to boost the fuel's octane rating from about 96 to about 102. It is an aromatic hydrocarbon, closely related to benzene and xylene, and is used as a solvent. I was running a normally aspirated, 14:1 compression ratio engine and when tuned for this mix the car went like the proverbial "cut snake" with no "pinging" at all. AND toluene is cheap by comparison to the other so-called octane improvers. I haven't used it in my ZED yet as V-Power works just fine. I really don't think I want to get up to 250 kph any faster.
