What type of engine oils are forum members who race their cars using. I have been using Penrite and Valvolene 10W50 synthetic oil but I am not happy with either, from an oil pressure point of view at temperatures up to 110degC. I have heard that Motul and Royal Purple XPR are good Also I have a thermostatic Greddy sandwich plate filter which has to be used with a greddy recommended oil filter QX-03 which is smaller than the standard filter used on VG30, AN-10 fittings and I have fitted a larger 190mmX 300mm oil cooler with 19 passes I have I have no bypass cooler. Eric has advised me that it would be better to have a larger remote oil filter and increase the oil sump capacity. There is very little space for a remote filter and what have other members done to increase sump capacity or oil pressure? Thanks Martin
The premium Motul & Royal Purple products are considered some of the best, but very expensive also. I've been running Castrol Edge in my racecars for the last 4 years and been very happy with it, haven't decided what grade I'll run in the zed yet though, probably whatever they have in a 40 weight.
Martin, my engine is similar to yours but my oil temp does not go over 100. I'm using Penn Grade 20W50 which has a high zinc content but would be happy to use a Penrite equivalent. They also have a high zinc content which is essential for a highly stressed engine.
i run Penrite HPR 15 (15w-60) its a full syn, more stable at higher temps she'll idle around 40PSI when hot, and peak at around 75psi when redlining i used to run 10W, but idle pressures where down around 35psi when hot, which i wasn't comfortable with
Being a race car Martin you should have plenty of options to install a remote oil filter as you would have likely removed a lot of stuff, aka Air Conditioning!!! If you are running a front mount then the drivers side front where the intercooler used to be will work, same if you are using side mounts you could mount it on the inside of the chassis rail as Chrispy suggested. I've installed the water injection pump on the inside of the LHS chassis rail in front of the AC condenser and its not a lot smaller than a remote oil filter.
Heard REALLY good things about RP XPR, I use their normal stuff and same with a lot of people on here and yet to hear a bad thing about it, topped the tests on that article awhile back also, give it a go I reckon.
no idea, don't have a gauge.. id say pretty hot.. thats after 5 hard laps around barbagallo raceway just have stock oil cooler
Those pressures seem high at idle, and about right at redline. Mine was about 15psi at hot idle and ~70psi high in the revs. That was with 15w40 oil, nothing special.
My engine with 10w40 110 psi start up hot 40 -45psi and like a rev tacho to 100psi+ every time I rev it changed to 15w50 same thing . running no coolers ,might drop a little with twin 19 rows in series?
Full 100% Poly Alpha Olefin and Ester synthetic, plus various additives, which varies from different manufacturers, is best. It costs more but cops more heat and pounding, and remains more stable, giving more protection. Some oils do marketing tricks by stating, full synthetic, although it may be as low as 76% synthetic. We use Royal Purple sometimes which is very good although expensive at $199 for 5 litres. Redline Race $125 gallon, Motul 300V $125 5 litres and Penrite 10 Tenths $75 5 litres, ELF Excellium $66 5 litres, Liquid Molly around $75 5 litres? I currently use Penrite. I am actually getting a sample of this oil tested to see how it coped after a few track days. I know Penrite 10 tenths is sheer free so doesn't drop viscosity, which these others are probably the same. Penrite is EFlex (Alcohol) safe. The higher the viscosity the safer, although it depends on bearing clearances. Also change it regularly. As for oil filters the bigger the better, as more surface area and less pressure drop. I run a Ford Z9 remote filter with a few small strong magnets on it to catch metal.
Oil Filter Bypass This is a system I am looking to put in my race car for the Ultimate in fine oil filtration with minimum oil pressure drop. A normal paper type oil filter is around 20 microns at best, I have a large System 1 stainless mesh filter which is 45 microns and then T in from a oil pressure line to one of these Amsoil remote by pass inline filters as per the second link which filters down to 2 microns and would slowly filter all my engine oil over about ten minutes. The opposite side of this filter has no resistance as it drains to the sump. The other set up we did was to run our turbo oil feeds straight off the oil filter outlet, to protect the turbo's. Otherwise it is a good idea to run a small inline oil filter on the turbo oil feed. http://www.amsoil.com/shop/by-product/filters-and-by-pass-systems/by-pass/filters-and-mounts/general-use-dual-remote-oil-bypass-unit/?page=%2fstorefront%2fbf.aspx http://www.amsoil.com/shop/by-product/filters-and-by-pass-systems/by-pass/filters-and-mounts/single-remote-bypass-kit/?code=BMK21-EA
Er http://www.performancelub.com/Royal Purple pricelist.htm $26 a quart, HEAPS cheaper than where you are getting your stuff from and he also offers bulk buying discounts.
