Put my 6000K HID kit in yesterday.
What a difference !!!!!
I can actually see where I am going now, and I don't need my foggers on any more just to be safe.
Actually, the beam is so nice and crisp and bright, it was initially quite distracting, but I am sure I will get used to it :D :D .

    Huge difference.

They look bloody awesome Pex, :)

have you alligned them correctly yet and if so, did you have any difficulties?

Got to see my HID Kit on yesterday as well, and your right about that crisp distraction. Although I didn't get to see mine at night, I can only imagine.

    :D

    Lovin it. :)

    That's bloody awesome... :)

    What a huge difference...!

Which HID kit did you buy if ya don't mind my asking...?

I've been looking to upgrading mine as well...the stock lights are like riding with table lamps. Always hated them.

Is there excess heat generated by HID's? Because if there is I'm wondering if it will damage the headlight housing overtime.

    Nice work...

Greg, is this the kit from Bankids? Do you have any pics of how and where you mounted the balasts, relays etc?

    BTW, they look great:zlove:

    Looks great PEX...

Was it difficult to install, & did it take long?

These are the kits from Bankids

mine are the 6000K, which he advised me would put the most useful "light to road".
Essentially it's pure white with just a tinge of blue.
Power consumption is lower than standard halogens so I would not expect there to be any heat problems, however I have only been for a 20 minute drive.
At the moment, I have the Ballasts wedged behind the headlights, as I haven't decided exactly what I am going to do with them.
I experimented with the relay kit, I found no difference in brightness between the bulbs when I wired one directly and one with the relay kit. For now I have omitted the relay kit. May leave that so I have something to do on the tech day :D.
Honestly Jono, if your not going to use the relay kit, you could knock the job over in about 15 minutes.

Over time, a film of dust will form and bond to the inside of the projector lense. Those that have access to a compressor and a long thin tube adaptor for the air gun, remove the globes and blow a slight burst of air onto the inside of the lense. Try it with a lower compressed air setting to start with. One will be amazed at the film that has accumulated over the last 15 years or so.

True HID's do generate a fair amount of heat but will draw less wattage then halogens. Those kits are rebased H3 or H3C globes and could therefore could even run hotter than regular halogens.

    Note:
6000k will generate a more blue'ish light beam at the expense of lesser light. Had a selection of 4200k to 5000k been done, the light colour would have been whiter and therefore more light to the forward area would have been realized. The higher one goes in the kelvin range the more blue to purple side of the colour sprectrum will be achieved. This will also translate into less usuable light being available.

With regard to the brightness of the HIDs

I asked member [Bankids] to supply in "his opinion" what would be the best option for me in "light to road". I did stress that I wanted the brightest white, that would lean to a blue tinge rather than a yellow tinge.

Afterall, I didn't want to buy HIDs to have a yellow looking headlight.

Regardless of any technical specification, I got exactly what I asked for from Bankids, and I am extremely happy with
    • the advice
    • the price
    • the speedy delivery
    • the end result

Yeah, all stock HID cars lke BMW come with 5700 from memory as this gives you the most light as you head towards 8000+ you get less light and more rice. In fact, from memory philips only make HID bulbs in 5700 and 6000 I think.

Can you tell me how the cutoff is Pex? Drive up to a flat wall at night like 15 meters away and turn them on at it. It their a sharp cutoff like you can see on the truck on the side:
    Or is it more blurred?

Yes there is a definate cutoff

I did not clean inside of my lenses though, so results could be sharper if they were clean.

Around the cutoff it stops sharply and is blue in colour.

    I'll take some pics 2nite

I'm afraid you're a bit askew as far as how the kelvin ratings coincide with the colours incorporated.
As you can see, the sweet spot for max amount of white light is 4200k. The more colour one whats to have the less overall brightness/illumination is achieved. The HID you're referring to is not true D2s or D1R Xenon bulbs, but rather rebased halogen bulbs. That's what makes these after market businesses flourish so much. People actually believe they are getting real HIDs when in fact they are not. Theyare a bit of an improvement over some halogen bulbs but not always. Those philips bulbs referenced to are also the rebased bulbs. They take the normal halogen base (in our case an H3 or H3C) and then graft a different globe onto that base utilizing a Xenon/Kryton gas combo to achieve something similar to HID so that it will fit in it's previous halogen housing.

    Here's a halogen projector with a 6000k HID (rebased) kit installed. Notice the scattering and refraction of the beam pattern. The Z will produce something similar;

Now a true HID projector with real HID bulbs (4300k by the way). You tell me how yellow these look?

    For those looking for a little clarification on the nuances of HID, true Xenon and rebased bulbs, after market kits, HID projectors vs Halogen projectors - look to a previous post;

I'll post up some pics of the projection pattern tonight

but, what I will say is that this mod for $250 was well worth the investment. A phenominal improvement.
I wasn't having a go at you perse', as your information is correct, but I did not want the impression implied that Bankids had given me incorrect kelvin value bulbs.
I asked for the whitest bulb with a blue tinge (for a little wank factor I guess), and that is what I received.

Yeah I probably meant 4700 haha, not 5700. I get mixed up like that sometimes. Don't worry, I've read all the info i could find on hidforum and hidplanet. That's why i'm going to get some proper projecters. I kinda liked the look of the s2k ones myself. i know theres more work involved though. And I'm going to try and look into getting a OEM bi-xenon for the high beams and fit that in somehow. Will look damn hot with a four HID low beam setup on the Z. :D

What projectors are they? E46? TSX? S2k?

I'll be doing a HID retrofit sometime in the future.

I was browsing mp3car and saw that you bought a transflective 7" lilliput. How happy are you with it? How well did it fit in the dash? Would you prefer something bigger?

    Cheers.

I'm very keen on doing a retrofit in a few months myself. If you decide to go ahead at some point post something up. I'm keen to help out and do mine at the same time.

Top stuff Greg. I've had mine now for some 6 months and I couldn't imagine driving
without them. I have the same kit as yours from bankids and I have the ballasts under the nose panel.

2nded on putting the ballasts under the

    Nice cool place for them.

Have installed these before and the wiring is long enough to have the ballasts under the nose panel if you have a pod filter...
