I discovered a product last weekend that will save on fuel costs! I visited my brother in Cairns last weekend and met a friend of his that is a distributor for a tin alloy fuel catalyst. I have heard of these things for years like the Fuelstar being ideal for leaded vehicle conversion, well this is the same sort of thing but has a longer operating life and a 12 month money back guarantee. What sold me about this product is this guy drives an LX Torana with an old red 186 (3 Litre) he has worked to around 300HP at 10.5:1 compression with standard valves and guides. With the fuel catalyst installed he uses only 91RON Unleaded! The other benefits of running this catalyst is a cleaner engine due to more efficient burn and greater fuel economy with figures between 1.5 and 2 Litres per 100KM better than factory as tested on a Gen 3 V8 Statesman. I have ordered one for my Zed and intend to make the switch to 91RON ULP after the breakin period of around 3000KM but I have been assured I will notice a significant improvement before the switch. Just think, at around 13 cents per litre less at the bowser, this thing will pay itself off in around 6 months for me anyway and that's not even taking into account the improvement in economy. Price should be under $300 and this guy is going to let me know about group buy prices of more than 10 units. When I have done all the testing and am satisified this is a good thing I will post the info in the group buy section.
Does it have any effect on the flow.......>> A TT zed running high boost will hit over 60psi of fuel pressure, so if this product effects flow it could cause starvation and pinging.
Not disbelieving the tin additive theory (don't agree with the prices of them though ), but I find the 300 hp out of a 186 red with standard valves and only 10.5:1 a bit of a leap of faith! If it's not Fuelstar, what brand is it?
Might be a good idea to do a before and after dyno  that way you can check if it has affected the a/f ratio and if any power changes.
Answers to questions As for fuel flow there are various models that can be purchased. The one I am getting is good for a motor up to 6 litre capacity but larger ones can be obtained. This 186 runs a very wild cam shaft, 10.5:1 flat tops and tripple SU carbs, good for mid 13sec 1/4 mile. This guy has been running this configuration for the last 10 months with no hassles and is a regular driver. The Torana has a healthy diet of 280KW Gen 3 Clubsport's for breakfast . To have a look at the product click here. As for dyno runs I have all intensions of doing so as part of my upgrade progress. Cheers, Karl
But what about the pressure drop?......>> My old ute had a 5.8 in it, but it only required less then 10psi of fuel pressure to keep the holley fed. The zed is 3 liter but needs 50+ psi. If the catalyst creates a restriction in the fuel line then it could drop the fuel pressure to a point at which detonation states to occure because the fuel will not have enough pressure to exit the injectors in the correct volume due to the increased manifold pressure. When you are doing all your before and after testing on the dyno I would strongly recomend having a fuel pressure gauge hooked up.
Here is a site for an Australian Manufacturer! I saw this on "Today Tonight" about a month ago and have been curious ever since. They did before and after dyno runs and it worked! I have sent them an email today asking what product they recommend for a Zed. I gave them details of fuel capaicty, engine capacity and fuel pressure of in excess of 60psi. Still waiting for a response. I will post details when I get a reply. The site is http://www.fitchfuelcatalyst.com/ It Has lots of info on the product. Cheers Tim
FUEL ECONOMY I NORMALLY GET BETWEEN 300-375KMS, IT NORMALLY LAST ME ABOUT A WEEK.I KNOW ITS HURTS WHEN YOUR PAYING $1.20 FOR BP ULTIMATE.
Is it normal to get heaps of soot around exhaust and/or the back of the car? Doesn't appear to be any real smokeiness but heaps of soot. I also noticed that my right side exhaust is a little worse than the right - possibly a cat problem??? How easy is it to gut my cats? Besides the environmental issues what are some of the outcomes of doing this?
Gutted cats = big fine if caught by EPA Fine varies from state-to-state, but previous discussion suggest between $2000-$10,000. Better all round to spend the relatively small amount of $$$ for hi-flow cats, and then only justified if you plan on replacing your entire exhaust system. Black soot in the exhaust tips is due to unburnt fuel, fairly typical in Zeds. Ideal combustion is very hard to achieve (run the risk of detonation) and leaves a pale grey residue.
fuel consumption im for real no bullshit, thats the mileage i got out of the car at the time now since i did a fair few mods to it now i doubt it would get the same fuel economy im talking about 12 months ago now (this is when the z was last in action)
i would like to know the non-turbo zed normally how many kms can be run for a tank? my zed just run roughy 350kms for a tank  but i have not done the service
At 8.2L/100km it works out at about 915kms. I doubt this would be achievable in the real world, but at 10L/100km it would be around 750kms (highway, of course). Around town, it depends entirely on how you drive.
I have spoken to the guys at Fitch! Their in-line units are okay to a pressure of 600PSI. They actually recommend in tank pellets for the 300zx. Need 6 pellets at a cost of approx $300. This is good for approx 400,000 Kms and will boost fuel economy and reduce emmissions. Sounds good especially with rising fuel prices! Need better economy! Cheers Tim
NA Fuel Economy My NA Auto gets about 450k before the fuel light comes on, thats with Premium from the freedom servo around the corner from me. Only highway driving is on the Ipswich Motorway (so probably class that as stop start traffic) Havent really noticed any difference in fuel economy using BP Ultimate or Shell Optimax?
