EL tape, blue and red, includes inverter

    Pretty much see is as clearing your taillights.......messy?....maybe the black soft stuff but saying that you might get some on your actual panel which is easy to remove with a little heat and some kerosine.......time consuming it would be thou...

    Guys all the quantities have been sent off so the group buy is closed at this stage.

    As some people may be aware, pexzed has recently had some trouble with his panel, in that some areas no longer light up. Needless to say I don't want twenty people with the same problem six months down the track so we are just waiting for a satisfactory resolution before handing over the money.

    Peter at electroluminiscent is being very helpful and likewise doesn't want any potential headaches down the track so he is looking at

    • why did it fail?
    • if the panel is simply faulty, will the manufacturer replace it without any problems?

    So that's where we're at right now. Couldn't have happened at a worse time but also couldn't have happened at a better time. Peter knows we are trying to have this tied up by the end of the year so we are trying to get it sorted ASAP.

    I'll know more later tonight as I will be ripping it apart

    As I explained to Rob via PM and Peter v ia email, it is likely caused by water damage from washing the car (so be careful when resealing the panel.
    Also, I will add, Peter has sent me an "advance" replacement panel (which arrived just today). That is excellent service, as anything regardless of the quality can fail.
    If it turns out to be my fault, I will forward funds so peter is not out of pocket.
    I'll also keep you guys posted on the outcome.

    Thanks for the update.

    Speaking with peter and he is of the opinion that if there is any chance of them getting wet then we should not proceed with the buy as the product is not suitable.

    Looking at the install it seems like everything should be watertight when you're finished so I'll be interested to see how you go and what you find.

    Having done this mod on my previous zed, your rear panel should easily be watertight. As long as you make sure all the edges have some tar on them and they are soft when you put everything back together, all should be fine.

    OK, I found the problem

    The EL Tape is sandwiched between 2 plastic laminate sheets. I am summising that the plastic laminate is not particularly flexible, and that the 300ZX centre panel itself expands and contracts quite readily as it heats in the sun and cools in the shade or at night.
    My EL Strip was secured with glue around the edge so that it would not move out of place. PLease see the picture, you can see it is split vertically, like it has had pressure trying to stretch it from left to right.

    I will only be using a small amount of glue in the centre at the top of this one so this can't happen again. I am prettty happy that the EL Tape is up for the job, but myself being unaware of the stresses that would be placed on the material, installed it in such a way as to shorten it's life considerably.

    Hope you all learn from my mistake ;)

    Looks good......just need someone to do the mod in terms of clearing the 300zx letters out as there is supposivily two ways.......

    so Pexzed are you saying that as you glued it on well, with the sun making it expand so did the el tape?...hence you only placing some in the middle.....
