Couldn't get to talk with him as he was busy, however he passed on the phone to one of his collegues and I must say, I was very impressed by our convesation. Talked with him at length (about an hour or so) and decided to go for it.. So, within the next two weeks he will be working on my engine. He advised that with about $10,000 I will be able to achieve around 250-280rwkw which is what I was hoping for to begin with.

All I hope for is to be able to tell the difference when I drive the car..

Ah well.. It looks as if though the way it almost over..

the collegue you spoke to would have been Spencer....

Spencer owns Nissport, where many of us take our cars. Joe is the mechanic that works there, considered by many to be the best zed mechanic in melb. My engine has been rebuilt there, and lots of high powered engines have come out there.

    Cheers

    Yep, twas Spencer..

Who seemed by all means the only mechanic who actually sounded like he knew what he was talking about..
He mentioned something which made a lot of sense:
If I take it to an unexperienced mechanic (in regards to the zx), I will be paying them to learn about the car.
So, thanks to those from whom the recommendation came, and by all means I will follow once my car gets completed. =)

    ZShop: even if only for a price comparison. Lindsay's a Z legend.

    I've used both.......>>

And from my point of view would never go back to Zshop. I will always get my engine worked on by Joe, and if he ever leaves Nissport then I will get him to work on it where ever he moves to. The man is a legend when it comes to the Z32.

Whether you are buying apples, positive chi badges, or a Z engine...

you'd be an idiot not to get more than one quote.

ZShop specialises in Zeds (whether you like the owner or not), so it would seem to be the logical place to get that second quote.

Not sure, but I know of a Positive Chi Badge that a guy sells in Sydney....

that can make your Z go even faster!! ;););)

If you go to Zshop make sure you go with someone who knows a lot

about a Z, the first time I went there I *almost* got ripped off HARD and was also lied to

For $10,000 there are many workshops with good reputations who will

build you a 350+rwkw reliable car. I would check out a lot more places than just 1.

I have achieved ~230rwkw on stock turbos, so for $10k anything less than 300rwkw you are getting ripped off IMO

    true, but....

i think you'll find (correct me if I'm wrong) that most of those other places are experts in silvia's, skylines, 180zx's etc etc but when it comes to the zed they could even find the battery. At least Nissport and Z shop are zed experts and have rebuilt many a zed engine...

why did Joe leave the ZShop ?

    Yes.........>>

I first met Joe when he worked at the Zed shop and recognised early on that he was extremely knowledgeable and honest which are good traits to look for in a mechanic. After some questionable accounting practices by the owner of the Zed shop I stopped taking my car there. Joe also left around the same time,(maybe he didn't like what was going on either) and I have been happy to continue having him work on my car over the many years since.

i've used both and they both suck  ;)

they are mechanics afterall; by nature they will squeeze you of every cent you own, and then ask for more.

spend the $10k on parts and do the work yourself.

With all due respect, what have 'accounting practices' got to do......

with knowledge about Zs and rebuilding Z engines, which is what eroyee is after and the point of his post?
