Yes it's too big. And so is my post for that matter...

I'm not an audio engineer but I know alittle about sound. To get deep bass you not only need a big driver, but also a big enclosure. And for an 18" driver, my estimate for enclosure size is in the rock concert catogary... I mean like man-height stack enclosures!

Calculating enclosure size and the bass-reflex tube length is a science, there are rules to follow and you can't chuck any old woofer in a box and expect good sound. The enclosure size directly relates to how low the bass will go because it dictates how much air can be moved. I don't have any sites book marked but a quick google search should give you all the info you need on matching a driver to cabinet size.

Also the bad thing about large bass drivers is that they are slow and sound 'wooly' (as opposed to the tight, rythmic, fast bass from say an 8" driver)..a driver that large would probably actually 'lag' behind the rest of the music because the lower the sound frequency, the slower it travels through the air. The effect of this is you find it hard to follow and distinguish individual bass notes in the music - large drivers make the bass blend into one sluggish blurr. The reason is that the large driver has so much physical surface area that it can't stop quickly and play the next note as fast as the music may demand.

Yet another thing about bass, the mega low frequencies also need a large free standing area to be effective. For example, bass frequency is actually lower in a large lounge room than in a bedroom if using the same system. So in a car sound scenerio, with the limited ammount of free air, you can never get seriously deep bass no matter how hard, or how much $$ you spend.

My suggestion would be a 10" max. for a car if you want a good, solid, tight musical experience....but some ppl just want volume and 'boom boom boom'!

Try out your 18" if you like, maybe phone some car audio specialists, but if they know their shit they will pretty much tell you the above.

:( Sorry for the negative post man, it's exactly the opposite of what you wanted to hear.

Thanks Richard, that was very informative. It also goes some way

to explaining why my 10" sub seems so clear / precise.

I had previously thought that a bigger sub would give a better sound, but, if what you have said is reight, myabe not in a Zed.

    cheers,

    Peter

i have to say the following about your reply...

first of all... thanks for the VERY indepth reply

to answer each point you've made:

as far as it being too big a driver... i've gone from a single 12" to 2 x 12" to 1 damn loud 15" (that subsequently lasted me one night) to this 18"

I'm not one to listen to music that has tight and doof doof bass... i like bass that shakes the shit out of me and is deep and more of a bwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwww than a doof... if that makes sence.

as far as the enclosure goes... the enclosure's pretty muhc going to be my boot. including the spare tyre well and everything upto the parcel shelf.

as far as the ports and enclusure diameters, i'm getting help form a friend of mine that has been in car audio for about 15 years and has built some of the loudest cars in australia... including the excel that pumps 160 something DB on termlab and has the world or australian record... (not 100% sure on the record but i know it has one)

i agree with everything you've said... except for the 10" being the perfect size. i'd say if you want bass go for a 6x9" if you want more... go at least 12" or 2 x 12"s... the 2 x JL audio subs i had were perfect... everyone told me how good they sounded and weren't just a boom and made the system a complete package. perfect bass, treble, midrange.

    thanks for your comments...

greatly appreciated... and i'll try and use as much of it as i can.

I'll post up pics of installs and etc... as it comes along but it'll be a while

    Sam

Man good on ya - your keeping it real. Massive Noise and your car looks dumped to the ground.

Sure, you will probably get better, more precise sound out of a 10" or whatever, but man that 18" is gonna shake the senses be heaps of fun to just listen/feel to.

    Go the Gunmetal Gray Zed's.
