Opinions?? ok to use?? Currently using 10w40, wanna try a thick oil to cure some early morning 2 second lifter noise....

    or should I go 10w60??

    the numbers confuse me...

    Cheers

i think ive put penrite 15-50...really great ...so i think???....

lol how is one suppose to know how you engine is handling it between 10-40 or 15-50?

ask mikey aparentli hes got the gold oil ;)

I thought the low number was the start up viscosity, so the lower the number the better for cold start ups. Then the top number is operating temp viscosity. Or something

i got the same problem too mark

using a 10w/40 right now got the lifter noise on start up then goes away.. looking at using a fuchs 15w/50 at the next oil change. Shits me up the wall tho as it never use to do it till i changed the oil oh well it happens use to get it in my old vl till i change the lifters.

Using Castrol GTX3 15W-40 and love it!

Change it regularly (2000kms - I drive hard) First no. is start up no. and second running temp/viscosity!

    ok, so.....

if i understand this correctly and I want to get a slightly thicker oil to alleviate some lifter noise, I should get a 15w40 rather than a 10w60?? (currently using a 10w40). Am I correct in saying that its the first number that denotes viscosity?

and is it just me or is it bloody hard to find a full synthetic oil in a 15w weight??

    Cheers

Not just you, I've had problems finding a 15w full synthetic too.

Use Nulon lifter ointment.. Works a treat... Also Motul 10w40

is a great oil.. I'm using that now and its so smooth...

yeah, tried the Nulon stuff - helped a little but didnt remove entirely

    my initial question stll remains.....

what denotes a thicker oil? I'm currently using 10w40. Would it be better to us a 15w40 or a 10w60?? I understand the whole viscosity when warm thing.... but in reagrds to making a noisy lifter or two quiet, which would be better?

    Cheers

I use the good old Shell 15w40 full synthetic.

I've never had any lifter noise or and other problems related to oil so should be fine.

I bought 2 25L drums of the oil before they stopped selling it in full synthetic. might still be able to get it if you order in a few drums like I did.

15w/40 is the perfect for a cold start... 40w when hot is a nice ballance.

yep I intend to eventually...... but not quite now....

I have another 25000km to go before my next 100K service... when the engine gets pulled apart for the service, I'll have the lifters replaced. But it will probably take me another year and a bit to get the 25000km....

wouldn't you want a thinner oil at low temps?

    10w40:
10w is the low temp viscosity
40w is the high temp viscosity

so... if you are getting lifter noise from no oil in the lifters on start-up, then wouldn't you want a thinner oil that gets up to the top of the engine quicker than the oil which is thicker at low temperatures?

i know rb engines are factory-specified to run 7.5w30 oil, and they can't be too dissimilar to zed engines...

if you ask me, marky-mark, and you want the best protection, i say try castrol 0w60 that's like $60 for 5L

zero weighted oils have been known to cause lifter

tick in zeds... Service manual states at least 10w for cold areas and 20w for hot areas...
