Just changed my oil after 5000k's and I put in 5 L when I changed it and only 3 came out today. Doesn't seem to be burning it through the exhaust, no blue smoke ever, only black smoke under load? I have a small oil leak at the back of the engine (getting fixed next week) but I'm pretty sure its not that much. Where else could it go? It's not in the water.

Would a good reading comp test rule out burning oil in cylinders?

, lighter oils just make ant leaks worse.

well 5L is 1.6ltrs too much. Im not sure how much the filter holds. But 3 litres in the engine and 400mls in the filter would seem about right ????

Chances are you were burning the oil because it was overfilled. Your oil leak will likely be worse when you drive the car, because of the increased oil pressure so it may not drip as much as idle as it does when you are driving

I never measure the amount of oil that comes out. I just check the oil level regularly and check for leaks under the car. Fix your oil leek and if its still chewing alot of oil, do a compression test to see if somethings a miss.

Was this just replacing the oil or oil and filter?

I didn't measure mine, just filled up bit by bit and kept checking the dipstick but there was definately less that 2 litres left from my 5 litre bottle (Penrite Sin 15W40 if it makes a difference) and it took most of the bottle, maybe 4.3 litres as a ballpark guess.

Yeah I know it's 3.4, but if I put that in it's not to the high point on the dipstick. I put in about 3L, check the dipstick then run the car for 2 min or so to fill the oil filter, then let it sit for 5 min. Then check it agian and top up if necessary. Then do a final check of the dipstick. After the first drive I check it again.

I can understand if I have overfilled it, it may burn some off, but wouldn't it stop when it reached the normal level. It seems like it just keeps using it. After thinking about it more, I am driving 120k's each way to work 5 days a week, so 40ml over that period doesn't seem that unlikley from the leak.

Perhaps my worry is premature. Thanks peoplez

    my NA...

has always taken 4 - 4.5 litres to read full on the dip stick.....

I know the service manual says 3.7 litres, but that doesnt seem like enough in my case.....

Don't you have a oil cooler and that nifty accumulator?

dont forget it also depends how big the oil filter is that your using, and how much oil you actually have drained out, i put about 4.3ltr into mine last night, with about 600ml into the filter (amsoil have big filters)
will check the level when i go outside today

I didn't put 5 litres in at the service all at once as I have sort of said. What I meant is since I've service I've put in 5 L. I did however put a bit over 4L in at the service and toped it up during the 5000k's.

You sure about that now? lol You have a known oil leak combined with adding too much oil (apparently) which would definately explain it...

Yeah put in about 4L at service and during the 5000k' the level dropped to the bottom of the dipstick, it took about a litre to bring it back to the top.

    hmmmmm

one litre is quite a bit of oil to lose..... if it was due to the oil leak, it would have to be one massive leak....??

have you had a comp check done?? when my original engine started using oil many years ago, I would notice that the dipstick would read somewhere between half to 2/3rds full on the dipstick.... so I would top it up as required... clearly something was wrong, and the comp check showed that cylinder 6 was down to 90 psi.... I never had plumes of smoke out of the exhaust, but obviously the car was burning oil.... maybe the CATS did a good job of getting rid of the smoke....

anyway, yeah, wouldnt hurt to have the compression checked...

    Cheers

    comptest

yeah I plan to get one done this weekend at the tech day. I'm a bit scared now. Car is still pulling 130kw though?
