Hi guys, I have a Japanese import 300 zx 1990. Yesterday when i came back to car after trip to shops it didnt want to start. Turned over fine but wouldnt fire. at same time i noticed a red warning light(3rd one along from left) which i havent see before and i cant find it in handbook, looks like large tube with a smaller tube in one side and out the other and squiggles above it ?? after trying several times over about 20mins it fired up and got me home. Today I tried it from cold and same thing, possible slight smell of petrol also. Fired up after several attempts. HELP....

sorry mate its like 4am here you wont get any detailed replys for like 5 hours...

    but from what i know..

thats the cat's sensor, if it comes up, either your car is fuel flooding and its burning in your cats (cats too hot)

    check the usual things... cas/ptu/connectors

my guess is that you have too much fuel going into your engine..

Thanks mate, if that were the case though, why would the warning light come on when trying to start from cold ??

    Overfueling is the symptom

most likely weak/no spark is the cause. Check the PTU. Do a error code check on the ECU.

Best not to keep cranking it until cause located as you can quickly foul the plugs. Once the initial problem is rectified, the fouled plugs become the next reason for not starting.

Hi. No problem. Its a very common problem you have. We tend to get casual with the replies!!!

Check out the tech section, try the 'ECU Diagnostic Procedures (Article 2)' link for the ECU diagnostic.

Quite simple to do the procedure yourself.

If you get a code 21, then its most likely the PTU which you can replace fairly easily/cheaply.

If you need assistance, there is a great UK zed shop (they are a member here) but I can't recall their name/website but I'm sure someone else can assist... (calling forum groupies:rolleyes:).

    lol umm ok...

3rd red light in the main row from the left is the catalytic converter overheat light. Can be caused by overfuelling (ie excess fuel entering the cats, getting burnt off in th em and the sensor registering that they're getting too hot. Besides this, they cannot control any function of the car, it is merely a warning light to alert you. A lot of guys have their's stuck on constantly after having exhaust work done (often left disconnected).

    So there you go, bro.
