Hi guys.. just curious about gear ratios for my 89 TT. Trying to learn rev matching for clutchless and downshifting and Id like to work by the numbers first .. that is best rpm and speed to shift gears. Cant find it in the tech pages Sorry if it sounds dumb Thanks
Yeah, does sound dumb. Just go for a drive. Up shifting is easy, drive, off the throttle as you rest the shifter against the next gate and once at the right rev, it will drop in. Down shifting, just give it a rev when in neutral, rest it against the gate and when it synchronises, it will drop in. While doing all that, watch your guages. Why the hell do you want to anyway? I do it upshifting sometimes because I'm lazy but I don't understand why you want to get technical about it.
I was always told that it could be done (shifting without using clutch) and that it took a lot of practice to master.. I guess its to see if I can, really. Also.. isnt resting the shifter aginst next gate until it can move at right rev considered a bad thing?
Clutchless shifting can be done in any car and I've done it since my L's. Great skill in clutchless shifting is crap and I'm not saying you need to force the shifter against the gate until it goes in, just firm, you can feel it and when it matches, it just slips into gear. Piss easy, just go try it. Be more practical and less scientific. Greater chance of grinding away your synchros if you're going to try and time it. There is no guess work. Rest against the gate and wait. You know what's even faster? Pushing in the clutch pedal. Maybe even trade your car in for an auto and let it take care of all the shift work.
its a pice of piss realy once you get the hang of it, I messed around in my pulsar before I did it in my Z suprisingly its the same lol As you back of the gas pul it out of gear and into the next one the higher the revs the extra second it might take to down shift/ slot in as the revs drop. around 40ks you can push in 3rd around 30ks you rev it to 3 or 3500 and it slots back into first or like 5000rpm at 80 to get it back into 2nd stuff like that jus try it out. I found if you push against the gate as mentioned above and rev it till it goes in you will grind your gears, I drive like this when im lazy but if im racing its heal toe all the way. if you get real good you can down shift at like 5000rpm with out even feeling it through the car
If you want to shift without the clutch, buy a dogbox or even better a 18 speed road ranger (because you won't f**k that). Shifting without the clutch will destroy your syncros, I dont care how good you think you are at it, a synchro will not allow it to go in without trying to influence the gear speed. Have you priced the parts to rebuild your box? Most of them are genuine only, so there is no cheap alternative when it wont go into gear any more because the synchros are gone or the selector forks are bent because you've been jockey shifting the thing.
I might even do a GB price on labour for said conversions Richard, me and you could make some money out of this gear changing misery.
Yes we'll look into that. It's obvious quite a few people on this forum are unaware that a clutch is actually required when using a manual box, not sure if a manual->auto conversion has been done before? Sounds like a good business venture!
Auts are sequential, bump them forward to go up a gear and pull them back to gown down a gear. Stuff the pansy flappy twigs, TCI Co2 shifter in satin black FTW.
I hear you can wreck autos by down shifting too! Not that it ever stopped me! I hate the big flaps myself but I was thinking of Jeremy Clarkson when I said it.
It doesn't necessarily fook them (autos), but like anything, it will wear out the clutch faces and friction material sooner than leaving it in drive.
