Tonneau cover bar question

Discussion in 'Non Technical' started by z32mountainbunni, Aug 29, 2009.

  1. Hey guys,

Can i get some thoughts about the best way to tidy up the bar that the tonneau cover rolls back into. The cover itself is mint but the bar is looking rather munted so what's the best way to fix it up?

I was thinking of taking off the crappy frayed bits left on there, all back to metal, a fine sand, then either painting it or maybe using contact?? Is it advisable to remove all the screws at either end or will i stuff up the spring inside? Surely u gotta take them off to get a neat clean finish, dont want a monkey looking job.

Any thoughts appreciated coz im new to the zedworld, got heaps to learn - but already know how these babys just love your hip pocket :zlove:

    Cheers

i retrimmed mine in microsuede (had some material left over from retrim), fairly easy job, took about 20 minutes. just take it apart, scrape all the flaking bits off and sand back the rest. then spray contact adhesive and stick on the fabric.

and yes, you can just unscrew it, you'll need to manually retension it when putting it back together. can be a bit of a PITA but easily doable.

  3. Yep sounds like a plan, thanks Martin.

Yours looks heaps nice - the Before shot of your bar is exactly wot mine looks like right now, pretty daggy.

    Cheers for that..

go down to Super c!!!!!!, auto b!!!!!, repc!!!! or similar retailer and get a tin of black crinkle finish paint. disassemble the unit, totally remove all the old finish, clean and repaint. simple, quick and looks quite good.

  7. Thanks for the input guys, I stripped it all back as u said and actually used contact. Man some of that existing stuff was stubborn az, even with a hairdryer trying to soften it so i could peel it away but im really pleased with the end result. The only thing I guess im thinking that time will tell how the heat within the cabin may affect the contact, if its bubbles or not. Right now tho i dont care, she looks good. But if that were to happen then i may take the other option, which "Cove" suggested of that crinkle paint. Lets see hey.

    Cheers
