I've got a spare S1 ptu in the glove box in the convertible and have converted the TT to a S2. Have 2 spare S1 and 1 spare S2 in the garage. Is that being paranoid ?

UPDATE 2 - Spare PTU I tried was stuffed as I cut it open after trying it and theres 2 wires loose.

Finally got off my arse and fitted my aftermarket fuel regulator (that I have owned for 2 years lol) so I can now see what the fuel pressure is doing. I have also bypassed the FPCU and the car seems to be idling much smoother and after this the fuel pressure sat nice and steady.

NOTE - there didnt seem to be the characteristic irregular stumble in the idle after this bypass. I drove the car very gently to work this afternoon (prior to these changes) and it ran ok but was lacking its normal responsiveness under throttle, so lets see whats happens in this regard in the morning.

Does this sound like a FPCU on the way out or a fuels pump????

You bypassed the FPCU and you are still wondering if that's the problem? If after the bypass the symptoms don't change, it isn't the FPCU.

Matt, you're welcome to try either my spare (working ) S1 PTU or my S2 that's in my car at the moment. Anything I can do to help just let me know.

I'm only a couple of k's from you now. The other side of the railway line.

    Cheers,
    Dave.

UPDATE 3 - Problem still persisting. Have bypassed the FPCU and it still persists, so the issue is not there. Have changed the PTU over for a known good one and the problem still is there, so thats that eliminated (may try another just to be sure). Fuel pump seems to be supplying the pressure required when it occurs so??? I am starting to wonder if it is the altenator, as I had similar problems last time it went although I am not getting the light coming on at all.

    Fuel Pump???

Car will sit and idle fine for aslong as you leave it. Problem only persists after driving.

Not sure if this is the problem but, some time ago I was suffering a similar "engine dying" problem.
Tracked it down to a small, flat plastic strip inside the filter sock on the fuel pump inlet. This strip had come loose inside the "sock" and was sliding across the pick-up tube(at which point it was being "grabbed" by the suction, and would block the inlet). I replaced the filter sock and had no more problems.:zlove:

    go over your wiring again,
before i retensioned my ptu connectors i could shut the car off by apply the slightest bit of pressure on the connector,
so id be retensioning/cleaning everything first

I have had a few cars with ptu connector pins pushed back in the plug and making contact sometimes and not others. FYI have also seen this with maf connectors, seems to be common on them particularly.

I'm also watching this quite intently. I have a very intermittent problem and don't know what it is. I have already looked at my pump, and noticed one corner of the sock was dark, for an unknown reason. I did find a small piece of plastic that looked a bit like a small sieve in the tank, though that made no difference. Maybe I need to go back in and look at the sock closer.

I had a clogged filter 'sock' on the 280. When you pushed it a bit not enough fuel would get through the filter and the car would lose power, stutter and then get going again as the fuel supply would catch up again.

Any updates on this thread as I am experiencing similar symptoms.

Have changed the fuel pump for a new one (minus the pick up which I had to transfer over), replaced the fuel filter, tried bypassing the FPCU.

Car runs for a while if driven easy but if you give it a boot full then it seems to run out of fuel and then stutters until it gets the pressure up again.

Have checked the vacuum side of the fuel pressure regular and the fuel dampener and there are no fuel leaks.

    Any suggestions?
