Took the beast in for a r.w.c today.I've got a couple of questions regarding the results.1 - the right tie rod needs replacing or tightening?.Is this something i could do myself?.I've looked for a link but no luck.2 - the turbo in and out line on the drivers side are leaking oil.Would this be a clamp and is it easy to get to.3 - the r.w.c say the pillar twin pod guages have to be removed ? . The do not impede the view out the window so why?.As anyone had a car passed with these in place?.4 - I riveted plates over the mufflers to cover a couple of small pin holes , it say they have to be welded in place or the mufflers replaced. My mufflers are very quiet and any new ones i put on will be louder so they will then not like the noise. These plates are well sealed with putty and riveted on with 20 rivets each. Thanks for any replys.
First of all the putty and riveting is a no no. seriously just get them replaced, you will never pass with them like that. you could replace the tie rod end your self if you know how to turn a spanner or a suspension shop could do it for you, shouldnt cost that much. oil lines will be very difficult, you would most likely be better of cleaning them very well and making sure they dnt continously leak. If you have someone say 50 that you know get them to take it across this is what i did . Just try not to back chat the guy it wont help your cause.
O.k so the mufflers need replacing, no big deal there.Tie rod sounds do able or maybe just take to pedders?.Oil lines i,ll have to look at from below maybe.Any comments on guage pods?.I,m closer to fifty than 20 myself unfortuantly .
with the gauge pods the best thing to do would be get a replacement cowl of a wrecked zed (should be 10 bucks). pull of the gauge pod (whole thing) and diconect the wries that will be running to them. Tape these wires to the metal part making sure they dnt interfer with any of the clips then put on the standard cowl. This way it should look standard whilst you get it accross the pits then simply do the reverse and you will have it back to normal. This is an easy job shouldnt take you long at all. Pedders could do it easily! Firstly oil leaking from a turbo is a nasty sign and probably means a good time for you to start reading some tech articles on engine / turbo removals (i am not saying it is stuffed but it isnt a good sign) it is really easy i did it when i was 17! It is most LIKELY leaking from a seal on the turbo so cleaning it up really well with a toothbrush and any other tool should probably get you across the pits.
Thanks. Apparently it's the oil supply and return hose to the turbo thats leaking.I might have a look and see if it's a clamp issues.( fingers crossed ).I will post up looking for a cowl for the pillar.
tie rods are easy as piss to remove/replace. jack the car up, take the wheel off, undo the 2 nuts attaching it to the lower control arm and undo the big bolt attaching it to the subframe. reverse these steps to re-attach.
That is NOT the Tie-rod(it's the Tension Rod). The Tie-rods are the ball-jointed links between the steering rack and the hubs.:bash:
I went and spoke to the mechanic .Apparently it's loose where it goes into the rack?. He said i might be able to tighten.I will get it up on the ramps and have a look a.s.a.p.Seems the other problems are only minor so fingers crossed it all works out. Thanks all for the info.
The Tie Rods are connected between the Steering Rack and the front hub Steering Arm, they have nothing to do with the Lower Control Arms(so why would you need to replace those?).
