If you pay someone to do it...

Doesn't cost much if you can do the welding, wiring and general mechanical work yourself. I've probably spent less than $4k on the actual engine and related bits on my V8 swap, it's all the other bits like suspension, bodywork, brakes, interior etc that is adding up.

I agree with Chrispy, doesn't cost much if you do the majority. I have owned 1UZ, 1UZ Supercharged, 1jz vvti and 2j (all in soarers and i did every conversion!!!). All are great engines - my pick of the bunch is the vvti 1j!!!!

Outdoes nearly every other Jap engine I have ever driven for smoothness, response and having a rediculous torque band for a 2.5L.

I Bought my last half cut from Rollin imports in QLD, and got it shipped to Sydney for about 5500 (which included the latest 154 5spd tranny).

Pain however, is the limited computer upgrades avaliable that can tune the vvti.

For the purpose i bought it for (response and linear pull) it was perfect.

Try and work out what purpose you want the engine to achieve. eg. 1000ps turbo strapped to a rb26 isn't going to help you much in a downhill environment. It's much like choosing your suspension and settings :)

Personally, look at the vq30det from PZP. The guys have a good thing going with the VQ. Newer engine means better metalurgy (spelling is bad :D), smoother engines too (usually).

Think about it - hope this helps your decision, unlike me, try not to through too much money down the drain :D

Good luck and feel free to PM me if you have any questions champ

some maxima's have the vq30de, the 350z has the vq35de.
they are both naturally aspirated engine with moderatly high compression, there are kits out there to either turbo or twin turbo them but dont expect much out of 10k-15k.

if it was me and i needed this done, it would either be a vq30de with a few bolt on goodies or a complete rebuild, is your zed N/A or TT, if its N/A you could prob find a TT with blown turbo's pretty cheap.
jump onto http://www.nissansilvia.com/classifieds/category.php?cat=turbos-superchargers_1 and grab two s15 turbos and rebuild with those.

more then enough to have a bit of fun with there...
just with the vq swap, you could prob do it with the vq35de, from the track 350z (same engine, just a better tune) they have 230kw at the flywheel.
add a good exhaust, intake, there are plenum spacers and larger TB's for them aswell.
a few little things like that should see some pretty good numbers for an N/A.

or a vq30det like in the PZP post

Mate, i dont want to sound harsh, but you dont have much knowledge of engine swaps by the sound of things so i would recommend getting this idea out of your head.

What are plenum spacers and WTF do they achieve?

  15. rollin

    rollin First 9

reduced heat soak in the plenum and extending the intake runners i guess

Not something that I'd look at as a power modification straight off the bat though. But I guess all the little things add up...but why bother unless you're trying to squeeze out the last drop?

Becuase they are quite cheap and what else are you going to do with a alread quite highly strung NA motor? Put your pennies away and buy a turbo/blower kit instead.
