Got my spiffy Recaro's, but the previous owner must have been a smoker :bash:

How do I get the horrible stench out of the fabric? Any easy way? Any good products? Currently got one of them outside in the sun to see if that helps.

Yeah like WLDTTZ said, fabreeze should get most of the stink out. Try and spray as much of the inside of the seat as possible also. Give it a day or two and then spray it again. After that you can try some fabric scent to mask any remaining stink, then fabreeze every now and again if the bad smell comes back.

isn't that just covering it up?

once it's soaked in it's very hard to get out. try getting them cleaned or something by a pro who has the detergent spraying vac machines. can't remember what they're called.

My zed is basically going to smell like a new car (I hope) once i've finished. Today I dismantled the heater box and cleaning everything, as well as air con tubes, blower box and air con stuff. As for the seats...that'll be tricky

Have pegs hanging off your rearview mirror. Anyone who gets in can grab one and put it on their nose. Smell gone!

With my line of work i have agreat productt hat i used in my zed - the smell takes over the whole car hey... the product is a professional deodouriser that you can spray on - wont stain the fabric.

What i did was get a piece of cloth/rag and saturate it in the stuff then left it sitting in the car duringthe day. When you get the chance have the windows down for a couple of hours just to let the breeze thru it then just keep the cloth in there til the smell goes away - or you could sprayt the seats, carpet are etc.

If you would like to try some i could get you a filled spray bottle for you...

    Benny_C About as subtle as...

As a bit of a fanatic about having a 'nice smelling car' myself, i think the only real way to actually remove the smell instead of covering it up is to have them steam cleaned, then shampoo'd. It's a bit of a hand having a brother that's a carpet cleaner, but it works better than just covering it up with other sprays and the smell is gone permanantly.

    rockchucker WTF???

It may take a few tries also. Don't give up on the first cleaning. A lot of those smells are very hard to get rid of. I would Steam/carpet clean the things every other week until all fo the smell is gone.

If you just spray stuff on it to cover it up then it will come back eventually. It sounds like it needs some deep cleaning.

that'll be easy for chrispy since the seats are most likely not in the car. he can air them out on a sunny day as often as needed after applying the cleaner stuff.

Yeah, seats (and most of everything else) is out of the Z at the moment.

I did find some odour remover in the shed so I'll give that a shot.

like others have said...get it professionaly steam cleaned...its the best way and let it dry out properly...doesnt cost much...you can get it done by some carpet cleaners or if you go to some of the places where you cna get your car washed(the proper places) the do interior steam cleaning too...so yeah try that out if all else fails

    easy

sell the recaro's to me for $100. problem solved, no more smelly recaro's.
Just joking, most good quality carpet or fabric cleaners should be able to get rid of the smell.

Spraying a whole heap of crap to make the seats smell good wont do shit... You are just masking the smell and the smokey smell will return down the track. You need to go to a car detailer to get them steam cleaned. Steam cleaning helps remove all the crap that builds up in the fabric. After they are done you might as well get the carpet done at the same time you can use what ever smelly stuff you like after its all done. Over the years the build up of your sweat, smelly clothing etc are transferred in the fabric as well as your roof lining if it is carpet like most family cars are so just spraying smelly stuff will mask the smell but not for too long. Thats why getting them steam cleaned will get rid of all the build up in the seats carpet etc will help get rid of smoker smell etc. Smoking is shocking and non smokers can really smell it in smokers cars so yuck! :vomit:

I had to do 2 used cars last week that had stains in the rear seats but i had to do it all by hand as the steam cleaner is broken  It takes time if you want the job done right the first time.
