because if you knew the story ... sounds like shes buying one for the wrong reasons..

oh yeh . autos are great for drag cars. there scary on the streets becuase u dont drop boost bitween shifts..

but there also twice as expensive to fix if you have a problem and they weigh tons

    actually 10kg difference

    actually 10kg difference ... an Aus-spec 2+2 NA weighs 1490kg manual and 1500kg automatic.

X3. The SAW mod is great, but it is still positioned between Auto & Manual(making it the second best option of the three IMHO).:zlove::zlove:

I bought my TT as auto - because at the time it was practicly impossible to find a decent quality Zed in WA for sale that was TT + Manual and not waaaay to over priced for its quality, then i found my TT which had a mint interior etc.. so i bought her knowing in the back of my mind that maybe one day with all the usual maintenance out of the way i would opt for the manual conversion, but i hear too many stories now of people having it done and saying - its great now, BUT i have a little trouble shifting into such and such gear or what not, so why change something that already works perfectly fine, so i imagine ill be keeping my TT as auto (even though a manual would be a little more fun :( )

dan gave me an earful too :p

i spose it has been so long since i had the z that i have forgotten how much they break down
we have 2 silvias, one is dans the other is mine, but going to get rid of mine soon, but was looking at maybe getting something different to the s13's as we will be keeping dans and i can always drive that when i get a silvia craving.

    urrgh decisions decisions....

    red32 You talkin' to me?

    Everyone above is perfectly correct!
My Zed is auto, and my son's Zed, which I have driven many times, is manual.

My AUD0.02 applies to any car, not just the Zed!
In city traffic, you can develop a huge left thigh depressing and releasing a clutch, while an auto means you have one less item to think about while you are driving. I live in a city, so I have an auto. If I lived in the country, I would have a manual.

On the other hand, an auto trans is REACTIVE... it does what it has been programmed to do, but often too late! The manual trans is PROACTIVE in the sense that you yourself program the shifts to suit upcoming situations. This makes for the better overall driving experience on the open road.

If you want to go road racing, a manual trans is the way to go... if your main focus in motorsport is drag racing, then the auto is probably better.

Whatever you choose, they are both brilliant!

i think it really is quite an easy thing to choose between when you factor in what you want out of the car. are you going to modify it? are you going to hill climb or drag? will the car be a daily driver in the city? obviously if you modify the car and install a heavy clutch then you aren't going to enjoy it much in stop start traffic nor will you enjoy a standard automatic if you want to hill climb. if you want to drag race then you can purpose build an automatic around it.

my car was automatic with a manual valve body and i loved it and would do it again in a heartbeat but for some people they would hate it because of the harsh shifts. the auto boxes are incredibly strong and can be compared to a turbo 400 box as far as internal strength goes.

do a checklist and you should be able to choose the best option easily

I agree dude. It makes me angry when people say zeds always break down. A poorly maintained holden is just as likely to break down as a poorly maintained zed. Back on topic.....I have driven both manual and automatic. If you want to show off how quick your zed is in a str8 line then go the auto (no loss of boost during gear changes). If you want full participation in your driving experience then go for a manual. I have an auto and it is scary fast from 0-100km+. The manual TT that I drove in had significant less power than my auto but I found it more fun to drive due to more driver involvement. So i guess it really depends on how much you want to participate in the general driving experience. Some people cant be bothered changing gears so opt for an auto. Speed is not just something you see on your speedo, its something you feel/see/hear. My dad just bought a brand new Jaguar XFR and the thing is bloody fast but its so smooth and quiet that you feel very little sense of speed and in my opinion its not much fun to drive. In terms of reliabilty, some people here have said the autos are more unreliable but I think most people are aware that the earlier model manuals have some issues with the syncros being soft and prematurely wearing out causing notchy/cruchy gear changes. The mechanics in the auto are very strong and there are no poorly made parts (ie syncros) so as long as it has been regularly serviced i should run sweet as.

lookup the stock factory 1/4 mile times. pretty sure a stock TT manual is 13.x and 14.x for the auto. not losing boost on shift doesn't overcome the fact you got 1 less gear, longer gears and more drivetrain power loss. mods will also have better results on the TT manual since they have better cams and turbos.

don't mind me though, i just wanted to fix up the [ quote ] code that some noob stuffed and made a chain of badly quoted posts.

Maybe true not sure about stock ?, But minor mods and the Auto's will run
    12.xx sec pretty easy .

That wasnt really his point though.

You can mod a manual just as much as you can mod an auto. stock for stock is probably the most level playing field to make judgement on otherwise there becomes to many variables.

personally ive got an auto and i like it.

stock i didnt like though i might add...

ive got a shift kit in it and also got a cooler hooked up and a temp gauge to monitor temps....

i have said i wish i had a manual a few times but mojority i have been happy that i have an auto.... does feel a bit slower but thats because it feels like its one huge gear.... but just because it feels slower doesnt mean it is ;)... alot of people dont belive its an auto after seeing how it goes...

i love doing mountain runs aswell in it. dont have a problem with it either. u have a HOLD button which lets u stay in a certain gear through the corner without the auto changing gears which is very usefull in the mountains.... the way i drive it in the mountains is leave it in D and the HOLD button activated. this keeps the auto in 3rd gear. when u get to a sharp corner/turn manually shift it down to 2nd gear, go thru the gear and back up into D... so the HOLD button is left activated throughout so that it doesnt downshift when @ wot in D. also having a shift kit the auto shifts are very fast...

i may convert to manual one of these days, but im surely in no hurry and i aint concerned about it.... if it comes it comes....

i hope to in the near future though upgrade the trans, get a 2800 stally etc.... after this though i prob wont even bother going to a manual trans... id like the setup too much

for complete control though manual wins hands down. for track, hill climbs etc.... if i got a dedicated track car 100% itd be a manual. but for road i really dont have a problem with my auto i like it. love putting the seat all the way back, cruising, not worrying about changing gears much, listening to some tunes cruising down beach rd checking out the chicks, targas off ohh just love it and when i want the power is there, shift down to 2nd gear WOT and off u go :)
