Im just about to get a once pice tail shaft and the mechanic has said that it would cost about $600. is this a reasonable price?

if you mean Camberwell in Melbourne, $350 from geoff at knox driveline. can highly recomend his work excellent prices and quick turn around. if you have a few tools and a bit of time get one from him and install yourself. then spend that other $250 on beers to congratulate yourself on being an awesome zed owner who refuses to bend over for expensive garage work
I paid $800 not fitted, doesnt include the dollars I spent getting 3 2nd hand ones in that were all unusable. So yeah $600 doesnt sound bad to me.

i went to the guy in vermont and he got me the one pice all installed and fixed the exhaust for $630. i thought that this was an alright price, from looking around at online shops asking 850 i went for this quote. i should have the car back soon. dont get me wrong i do just about all my own work on my 300zx and i cant stand paying for some guy to work on my car with his hands when i have 2 just the same in perfect working order hahaha cant wait to have my car back.
