Power steering issue. Your thoughts?

My power steering has been playing up the last couple of days where if i turn the wheel, it would feel like the power steering is not working, then half way around the power steering kicks in making driving quite awkward.

This happens randomly, so it's not like a failed PS pump, but an intermittent problem.

I have plenty of PS fluid and no leaks.
There is no belt squeel or any strange noises from either the belt or pump.
So from these check aswell as a visual, it all looks to be working fine.

However, when i test using Datascan, the ECU power steering light only shows "on" occasionally while i'm doing full lock to lock at idle. So it looks like it may have something to do with a poor connection from the PS pump to the ecu??

But after searches and tech searches, i can't find much in the way of wiring to/from the PS pump.

    Any ideas/links folks??

    Cheers,
    Benny :zlove:

Check the steering angle sensor Benny.

Have you been doing any electrical work in and around the dash or swapped your stg wheel?

as a matter of fact i have recently had the trim off under the steering column to swap with velour trim, so i guess it's possible i've bumped a connector under there.

Are you talking about the Hicas angle sensor rob? I woudn't have thought it would effect the power assist mechanism...

I'll try having a look at it. :)

I've never had stg column apart to look but sensor may be either faulty, damaged/off centre, or wiring suss. See FSM ST-58

yeah, and dangerous too if your heading round a corner and the steering suddenly hardens up. used to happen to me- as above check all wiring / connections.

Fontii, you said it used to happen to you. Did you actually cure it by fixing a bad connector? please elaborate and can you point to a particular connector/sensor?
.... or for that matter - anybody who has this problem and cured it. :)

I've just now had the the steering wheel, boss kit, steering column colvers off and checked all wiring coming from there, the only wiring coming from the steering side of things is the hicas angle sensor, and it seams to be all looking good. I tested that the sensor was working by (purposly) setting it 180 degrees out (12.00 instead of 6.00) and went for a quick blat up the road and sure enough, after about 1km up the road the hicas light came on - indicating that the wheels are not straight and thinking that i'm doing really big, fast circles. :D So that seams to be working. (and yes i've put it back in correct position again ;))

If I don't get further feedback on the electrical side of things, i'll pull one of the front wheels off in the morning and have a look at the steering rack/suspension setup to look for anything obvious. Will keep you's posted.

Thanks for the feedback people, keep it coming :zlove:

Long shot .... don't take too seriously:

I have seen one PSCU with a cracked pcb, although that caused total PS failure. Re-soldering broken tracks fixed it.

More likely a steering angle sensor problem. Give Gavin Wood a call?

did anyone fix this problem? if so what did you find?

    cheers

Yep, once when doing an oil filter change I knocked/broke the connector going to the PS solenoid. This is located next to the oil filter and has a bit of black conduit and wire which gets brittle with age. I had to take it out and resolder the connection to make it work again. Worth a check..

yeah try wiggling the connector to see if you have an intermittent circuit, if so thats your problem, take it out(get some PS fluid first!) and resolder

i have a similar problem with my power steering, but mines usually half off and some times for a few minutes it might come on.makes it much easier and safer to drive the car when you can have more precision in where your driving.
now i have check the conncetions on the solinoid on the steering rack a few times.it looks pritty good but i didn't check it thoroughly.it could have a half arse break in the cable up along the cable going up to the main harnis, cause it does go around where a old dodgy alarm use to be , and its been wraped in black tape non factory, but it couldn't really move..
Is thier any other sensors around for the steering on an australian n/a(means no hics, rear steering)....

Hi All...sold my zed ages ago....also had this problem...this is a copy of my post way back then...hope it might help....
    AT LAST!!
I have had my zed for 14 months now and the steering has always been intermittent....The speedo was ok....so over this period of time checked fan belt, oil reservoir, steering rack connection...all were ok....virtually left the pump and the power steering control unit under the ecu.Tried the cheapest and went for the pscu($50)....fitted it Saturday and cant take the smile off my face.....power steering works all the time now....not sure if all the same part number....mine is a jspec na auto....got the part off a auspec na manual....p//no is 28500 43p10

Sounds great! That would be my next point of call is to try swapping PSCU with someone else aswell to try out.
I haven't noticed mine being as bad lately, although i haven't been driving the Zed too much of late, but i think the problem is still there. Might try swapping with someone on the 90TTZ Dalby tech sleepover weekend coming up. :)

That's good news for you though Ricky, good stuff! :)
