Hey guys ive just bought a 1992 Z32 2+2 5 Speed, The Body is in excellent condition pretty standard apart from a set of King Springs which only give the car about 60mm of ground clearance, NOT PRACTICAL!. only other mods are, New Extractors and Exhaust, Air Intake, Exedy Clutch, aftermarket Apexi Computer, and seemed to be mechanically fine apart from a few things picked up when i had my inspection. Paid $8800 but had a few mechanical problems including,
    *Starter Motor
    *Coil Pack Connections
    *Injector Plugs
Which is Wear & Tear for a 1992 Model Car. So i booked it in at the Auto Electricians (Allens Auto Electrical, Nowra NSW) to have the work done and asked if the car could be put on the scope to see if any other problems. and was told that it was no problem i could pick it up that afternoon. When i returned that afternoon to pick up my 300 the auto electrician told me he had checked everything and there was no problems everything was fine. So i left, pulled out onto the highway and gave it some and there was a pop and a dirty flat spot, so i pulled back into the auto electricians only to have white smoke piss out of my engine bay. It was my coilpack burning the insulation off itself so tell me how a Qualified Auto Electrician can miss something like that if he had done Diagnostics!!!!! So I then replaced a coilpack as the others are still fine. A Personal WARNING DO NOT USE (Allens Auto Electrical, Nowra NSW)!!!
    *Coilpack

I then booked it in at (PEMBREY'S BRAKE & CLUTCH, Nowra NSW) WOULD RECOMMEND TO ANY ONE!!!! to have the whole car checked for any mechanical faults and the games began. The List Started as follows

    *Rear Main Seal
    *Steering Rack RECO
    *No 1 & 3 Injectors due to a miss
    *Injector O-rings & Insulators
    *Slave Cylinder
    *Top Radiator hose
    *Power Steering Hose

This is the list i recievied from pembreys so i gave the go ahead thinking it wouldn't cost more than $2000, but unfortunatley upon pulling things apart we have discovered more parts that need to be replaced which include

    *Full 100k Service Kit
*All Seals, Gaskets, Belts, Waterpump, Thermostat, etc
    *Rocker cover Gaskets, Screws, Washers
    *2 Manifold Gaskets
    *Upper & Lower Plennum Gaskets
    *aacvi Gasket
    *Throttle Body Gaskets
    *Hard Bypass Hoses
*Lower Radiator Hose Kit (Aftermarket Alloy)
    *Koyo 53mm Radiator
    *Tailshaft Centre Bearing
    *2 Engine Mounts
    *Sump Gasket
To Name just some off the top of my head so this took it up to around the $6000 mark with labour included. Until we decided to completley remove the motor as the gearbox, tailshaft, radiator etc were already out and now all seals needed to be done and is more effecient to work on an engine stand than in the car.
So all has been well all the pieces were starting to come together untill this morning when the mechanic called me and asked to see me at the workshop, Long story short my Rear main seal has eaten into my CRANK and two grooves now run all the way around my crank. But No Internal Damage.
Now im looking at pulling my Crank out and having it machined so if anyone can recommend where to send it it would be a great help!! And if there is anything i should beware of.

Hopefully im nearly at the end of discovering more problems it just seems everything that gets done cause another thing to go wrong.
I thought about doing a quick fix and selling the car but ive come this far no point turning back now, and ive fallen for her even though its costing me.
Looking foward to getting to know some more experienced people with Z's and many years of trouble free Driving.
The Outcome of this whole event will be posted at a later date along with some photo's of the 300 and the work bein done.

Most of those gaskets do not need to be replaced unless you pull parts apart for some other reason. Why did they pull the lower plenum off ? To replace the gasket ? Hope they replaced the det sensor and all the under plenum hoses when they had it off to change the gasket.

    All a learning curve buddy.

My 1st Z i got did a head gasket within 3 months. I brought the car for 6 and spent mabey another 10 gettin it to a good standard.

But its all a good learning curve. I intend to do much better this next time around :)

No offence mate but it sounds like your being taken for a ride, and an expensive one at that. How did they assess ALL of those gaskets need replacing? Was the sump gasket specifically leaking oil? And can someone tell me how the HELL a rubber rear main seal puts grooves in a crankshaft. Machining the crank basically means engine rebuild. These guys are laughing all the way to the bank. IMHO run and run now, before you go bankrupt. Take it to a reputable dealer that knows zeds.

If you've got the tools and the time I reccomend that you do it yourself.

None of the things listed require the engine out, but with that much work it my not be a bad idea.

Z's and practical never belong in the same sentence together! haha

I'm with sabrewolf. There's no way all those gaskets and shit could be screwed, make sure you're not getting robbed. Unless they are all spent and leaking for real, I'd get another quote just to be safe though. Seems unlikely to me all that needs doing though, shit on my 20 year old Z31s I havent even needed to replace those gaskets yet due to wear.

Gaskets are piss easy to replace, they just take ALOT of time. Shops know this, it's a walk in the park for a massive wad of cash for them. Becareful!

I wouldnt be so hard on Allens auto electrics, I dont think he deliberately turned a blind eye to something he could of charged you for, it was on the way out probably and when it got a new connector/cleaned got more current/voltage and fried. Sometimes when you improve one thing it stuffs another with complicated ageing systems its deffinately part of the Z curve. So information and consideration to maintaing the car is important and thats why you need to be here :)

How many k's old is your engine ?

If you asked them to fix everything that needed fixing there just doing what you asked and approved.

*Rear Main Seal - was it leaking ?
*Steering Rack RECO - was there a problem with your rack or was it leaking hoses
*No 1 & 3 Injectors due to a miss - probably could of been resolved with a good injector cleaning service
    *Injector O-rings & Insulators - fair enough
    *Slave Cylinder
*Top Radiator hose - cant hurt
*Power Steering Hose - as above

    That all seems reasonable.

*Full 100k Service Kit - if its due you bet
*All Seals, Gaskets, Belts, Waterpump, Thermostat, etc - associated with the 100K its a given
*Rocker cover Gaskets, Screws, Washers - hey the plennums off and may off been showing signs of leaking
    *2 Manifold Gaskets - Exhaust ?
*Upper & Lower Plennum Gaskets - not sure why the lower plenum had to come off ?
    *aacvi Gasket
*Throttle Body Gaskets - not sure why these would need doing
*Hard Bypass Hoses - the small rubber water hoses ? a full bypass would of been better
*Lower Radiator Hose Kit (Aftermarket Alloy) - not a bad thing
*Koyo 53mm Radiator - If you still had origonal factory radiator not a bad idea
*Tailshaft Centre Bearing - wobbles/knocks it needs to be done
*2 Engine Mounts - debatable, quiet possible needed doing
*Sump Gasket - if it leaked

I guestimate about up to $3500 in parts so thats about $2500 in labor at say $85 = 30 odd hours, sounds a little high but quiet possible for what is close to to a engine out, and that is the thing you could be rebuilding the engine for a bit more which is what you will be doing with crank out rings/hone/headgaskets etc should be done, but did you need or want to go that far, from what I can see there has been a bit of a garden path, but you have said report/quote /approve, I can understand if you have gotten in a little deeper then you wanted, but your in now, so if they deliver what they say the are and do a good job and its what you want be happy.

You could argue its a $800 high but in the context of getting a good job done I think its not too bad, but when they are finished I would expect no vacuum leaks odds and ends tidyed up and a sweet running engine.

I know other members have suggested you are being bent over and if they arnt doing the job properly then you are, just make sure you get DETAILED invoice/reciept cause with that much work and money being spent you certainly have a right to expect it to be a resolution to any problems that have been diagnosed, quoted and approved by you.

Its actually quite a common thing for a seal to go hard and wear grooves in the crank, A simple fix is to modify the seal so it sits in a slightly different place and has a new contact point on the crank

Yeah I had never heard of this but a mechanic mate of mine was fully aware of it, but he didnt offer the mod seal to make it sit in a slightly differnt position solution, would be a good way to put the breaks on escalating costs on this job.

BTW rollin I dont care what everybody else says, I think your smart :D

How many k's old is your engine ?

Motor has done 150,000 which i didnt think was that much, but you're not wrong when u said i hav been led down a path, but in saying that i gave the ok for the work to be done but at the time we didn't know the extent of all the problems but the bill would of only been around $2000.
As we have gotten further into it the job more things have been discovered and coming this far i wouldn't stop now and do a half ass job. i know some people think it is a waste of time and money pulling the motor out and doing all seals and gaskets but ive already gotten here and im not paying this much money in parts and labour to hav an oil leak which could of been done now.
Although some gaskets are in good condition ive got the motor out of the car and the way i see it is, it's already out and i may as well do it all in one and know that im not going to hav any problems further down the track.
I will admit to any one im a fussy bastard expecially when it comes to my car so every piece of work which seems stupid to do now im hoping will pay off in the long run.
