WIth the motor running and my foot on the brake, the button on the side at the top of the gear selector won't push in , so it won't pull out of Park. I can use the trigger on the front of the selector and then the top button will push in and I can then move selector. Is this electrical or mechanical?
do your brake lights come on when you press the brake pedal? might be a problem with your brake light switch as well, not sure if the 2 would be connected or not
When you press the brake pedal, there's a solenoid that is supposed to operate thus allowing you to press the button. First port of call would be to check the fuse in the engine bay (Passenger side wheel arch). The fuse is called "Shift lock". I assume that this fuse controls this circuit. It could be other electrical issues or the solenoid could be non-functional. You'd have to test the wiring and/or the solenoid if the fuse is not blown.
beauty thanks... Thanks a milliion for the reply. Will check the fuse and then check out the solenoid. Keen to get home and give that a go. Thanks
Still no joy Checked the fuse and it was okay. Any ideas where I might look for the solenoid. I notice on my other Z that when I touch the brake pedal I can hear a noise from under the dash somewhere that sounds like something electrical that affects getting the car out of park. Thanks for the tip.
It's all under the centre console. You;ll have to strip that back (section around the shifter). It may just be a mechanical issue also (linkage or something). You'll get a better appreciation of how it all works once you can see it.
will give that a go... Will have a go at pulling the console apart, and yeah, should get an idea from there. Thanks for your help, and kinda looking forward to getting to the bottom of it.
If the solenoid is the problem and your on a budget, then just pull it out. It won't affect normal shifting. Its just a nonsence safety device. If you don't have kids then you'll be right If not then I might sell you mine if I can be bothered pulling it all apart again. Good luck with the diognosis
giving it a go... Am going to pull the console apart this weekend. If the solenoid is just a safety thing, I might give it the flick. Will let you know how it goes. Thanks for the reply
dont pull it apart!. just put your head near the shifter and listen for it!!!!!!! no click (well its more of a servo trow out sound than a click) mean no workies, click mean workies and try the manual override befor epulling it appart, sometimes the shifter gets gummed up. happened to me once and happened to a mates car today infact!
it gets worse.... Now the trans will not change out of 3rd. I can take off in 1st, but when I put it in D it goes straight to 3rd and stays there. If I start off in D it starts off in 3rd and stays there. Went to Auto trans mech and he plugged in his diagnostic thingy and it will change gears so transmission is okay. He says it is electrics, but not sure where to look.
what does it look like?... Had a look at the shifter mechanism and a bit of built up grunge around it all , but no joy once I cleaned it. There is no sound coming from around the shifter when I listen, and not sure exactly what the solenoid looks like - is it the white thingy?
Check your selector switch is not in "HOLD" mode, this will lock out 1st gear when in "D" I can't remember the colour, but it will have at least 2 wires running to it, and it will connect physically to the base of the shifter area. When the brakes are applied + ignition on you should be able to measure 12v in the wiring that runs to it. Either use a multimeter or a test probe.
not in hold, but... although the switch is no tin hold mode, I am wondering if it may be faulty, although the HOLD light comes on dash when I switch it on and off. Would have been great if it was this simple. The thing that I am calling a solenoid is from memory about 50mm x 30ish, and yes it had I think 2 wires. WIll try a test light on it and see if it is a goer. Thanks a million for your time, I really appreciate it as this whole transmission thing is starting to wear me down.
No power There is a part, not sure what to call it, which has an arm that is meant to pull back and swivels a nylon guard which when activated allows the button on top to depress. There is no power getting to this so it can do its thing. Not sure where to trace it back to , but will keep trying to locate the source. Can't find a blown fuse anywhere. The two wires coming from the master cylinder - anyone know what they do? It's just that I have recently had the master cylinder rebuilt and this is when the whole can't gey out of park thing started.
thought so.... Was just hoping they may be for triggering getting the thing out of park. I'll just keep searching for where the power comes from to operate the get of park thingy. Thanks.
