yesterday the thread on my petrol cap dissolved into my fuel tank when i went to fill up .... but i cant tell if there is anything wrong with the filler neck or if it was just the cap ... here are some pictures i took (sorry they are crappy they are from my phone)

did the rough edge around the filler neck just cut away at it? is there an easy way to smooth it out? will i be right to clean out the filler neck & put on a new cap .... my car is the only way i can get around because i live in bushland with not much public transport :lame:

any ideas would be appreciated :)
    thanks

thats weird my petrol cap doesnt look like yours and my nozzel hole is way different to yours as well. Ive got a gold latch thingy. Yours looks really bad sally. Dunno what you can do.

your thread did not dissappear into the tank. Your "cap" is actually the cap sitting inside the filler neck. Thats why it looks funny. The neck has snapped off from the tank hard pipe thingy. best bet would be to put the cap thingy in a vice and remove the cap from the filler neck. then i suppose you would have to get some special petrol safe sealant and glue the neck back on.

    bluecube's correct.....

The threaded section has broken off the filler tube, it is still attached to the cap.
DON'T try & glue it, get another one from a wreck.

Looking at the pictures it appears that it was glued in originally.

hmmm so my best option is to replace the whole filler neck and get a new cap?
how do i go about removing the old one?

The filler neck has to be replaced on J-spec cars for compliance to get the smaller sized hole for unleaded bowser nozzles.

The new neck is usually glued into the filler pipe. Mine has leaked and come loose too. I coated it thickly with sikaflex and pushed it back in. No more petrol smells.

The threaded part of your cap has broken away and is now in the filler neck.

First step is to remove the threaded part of the cap from the filler neck.

    2 ways of removal.....

In both ways PLACE a rag into the filler neck to prevent any unwanted debris from entering the tank
( a hanky sized rag should do the trick nicely.... remember to leave enough rag hanging out so you retreive the rag after the fix )

    A/
Grab a pair of pliers ( a set that will fit inside the broken plastic threaded section) and place the plier jaws into the filler neck.
Pull the handles apart (IE:eek:pening the plier jaws) till they grip onto the plastic threaded part in the filler neck.
Rotate the plier handles in an anti-clockwise direction ( undoing the thread )
Try with a small amount of pressure first up and if the pliers slip then increase the pressure slightly till they grip the plastic threaded section.
Dont try and add huge amounts of pressure, this will place more grip for the pliers but will also add more grip to the broken threaded section to the filler neck.
    Trial and error.

    B/
    ( remember that rag ... )
Use a screwdriver and break up the plastic broken threaded section....
    Removal in bits.

As for the cap....... its left hand right shoulder time ;)

Most servo's have a 'generic' or "emergency cap"
    ( bright orange cap )
this should do as a cap in the short term whilst you get a replacement cap.

If ya have trouble give me a ring

excellent smithers ... ill give that a shot this afternoon hopefully shouldn't be to hard ... already spoke to repco and they have a cap waiting for me which

think i will still need to clean out the tank anyway cos some of that rubber shit has already fallen into the tank ... but i needed to replace the gasket around the fuel tank lid thing where the pump is anyway

thanks heaps for all the help guys :)

    Wouldnt be overly worried.........
The fuel pump has a mesh filter so its not likely to make it into the pump.

    &

The pump sits in a "well" or "anti surge pit" ( baffled area inside the tank ) so its even less likely that the cap fragments will even get near the pump anyway.

Put the fuel tank flush on the "to do one day" list
    ;)

Forgot one we did on a broken and well stuck holden cap a couple of years back....

    Option C / ;)

Grab a bit of sand paper and sand the now exposed metal part of the cap ( where the plastic thread once lived ).... sand it enough to remove most of the crud from the metal section.

Grab some Araildite (sp ?? ) and mix it up then smear some onto the metal part of the cap......

shove the cap back onto the filler neck
( may require some "brute" strength )

    allow Araildite to set (24hours)

    unscrew cap from filler neck.

The glue should grip the broken threaded section and allow it to be undone as normal.

Again...... left hand - right shoulder in regards to the cap
