    Hi Guys,

My Z32 seems to have a grinding noise when I push the clutch in fully when it is in gears, it only seems to be when I gear down. And it seems its when I gear down at revs that the engine would have to kick in to slow down the car. Happens also when I am idle though... not as often. I've checked fluid levels everything seems to be fine, I can feel the grinding through the clutch pedal. Seems to be getting a little worse.

When I pull the clutch out slightly it stops. Any idea what it could be? I had this drama about six months ago, and they replaced the clutch and told me the one in it wasn't right, so they put the right one in, so I doubt it could be the clutch, maybe a thrust bearing?

    welcome
It sounds like thrust bearing which applys pressure to the pressure plate in the clutch housing
Go to the top of the page, type into the search bar, clutch,or thrust bearing, clutch noise etc and all your answers will be revealed

No, just remove the box and the bearing just slips off the input shaft. About $500 in labour I'd guess. $20 for the bearing. Do it yourself if you have a good selection of tools and little hands :D

lol so I have to take off the exhaust and all that to get to it? should be a fun day, $520 doesn't sound too bad price wise, be about 5 hours worth of labour if i do it myself?

No, about 2 days if you do it youself. It's a prick of a job and a real pain without a hoist and a tranny jack. Full exhaust off, tailshaft, starter motor, clutch slave, then the gearbox with half the bolts in a real prick of a spot. You need a breaker bar, to 1' extension bars and a uni joint to get to some of them  Pay the money unless you want the character building experiance :p

I second that, its gonna be hard to get to the top bolts of the gearbox, so unless you have a few japanese hands, cause I swear they are the only people that could fit up there since they built the thing, Aussie hands won't go, let the mechanics deal with the pain.

Your gonna have to strip it right back...

I've got the same problem. Was going to take it to the shop.

What else should I do at the same time.

    Thrust Bearing
    Rear Main Seal
    Clutch

    Anything else worth changing?

    Many thanks,

    Dono

I've done a clutch in a day by myself but that was in a galant :p

Re grease Input shaft, replace tail shaft seal (if its old), maybe a fresh dose of oil, check thrust bearing for play, apply some grease to that too, check thrust bearing fork and pivot joint, check for any oil leaks including inside the bell housing and generally check over the whole thing, especially shifter links and any bushes that go in them. Might as well while its out ;)

I did one in a day too, but that was a Navara :p The Z took me 3 days with some other stuff as well.
