Hey everyone, I just bought myself a 300ZX TT Manual 2+2 1991 model and there are a few things i would like to get sorted out. Firstly, when the car is cold and i start it up for the first min or so the revs will bounce around about 600-1100RPM but once its warmed up it idles nicely. do you think this is anything to worry about? also i have the same problem a lot of people seem to have with the steering going from light (power assisted) to heavy. again it doesn't bother me to much but i would like to get it sorted. There is also a wurring type noise that seems to get louder in different gears (seems loudest in 2nd gear) so I'm thinking it could be the gear box but i don't know a mate of mine who owns a Z said it sounds kind of like a bearing. so if anyone has any opinions on any of these problems i would much appreciate any help!
    Thanks!

    Here ya go Clicky
That should give you something to ponder over.
Please visit our tech section, it's searchable and contains heaps of great stuff (link on the blue bar below the logo).

The noise may be coming from the dust boot (assuming you are manual). When you change into some gears, if the boot is torn or has come loose, gearbox noise is allowed into the cabin :)

If the ECU isn't getting a signal...

from the coolant temp sensor idle will be erratic. Do a self diagnoses to see if this is your problem (code 13 off the top of my head), and if so clean CTS connector and sensor pins and reset ECU.

make sure you get all servicing done, if not already, the 100k service. you can supply the kit from member caz. get the car looked over. i would reccomend amec autocare in brisbane if you are near. great people who know what they are doing. they are also auto electricians so they can look over your gearbox if need be. as for power steering, make sure the ps hoses are all good, might be nothing or might be a cracked hose.

    welcome to the jungle :)

gearbox noise im guessing is the thrust bearing which applys pressure to the pressure plate in the clutch housing :zlove:

power steering ,check the fluid level and also tighten all hose clamps as they get loose over time

erattic idle as the yellow submarine and jono said, check that tech and also give the throttle bodies a clean as they gunk up with deposits, its a very easy job click me to learn how to clean the throttle bodies

Thanks for your help fellas! I'll take a look at the dust boot on the gear box, could that still be causing that noise even though it seems louder in certain gears? also it has had its 100,000km service. Thanks again for the speedy replys and if you have anything else to add feel free! :p

    Try this

for your gearbox problem. Drain the oil, have a good look at what comes out with the oil, metal ect, that should give you a clue as in what to do.If large pieces come out with the oil, bigger than the normal fine particals you may have bearing, syncro, problems. Put some redline mt 90 in and a tube G30 nulon gear and diff treatment ( even if you dont have a internal bearing syncro problem this stuff is good news for all gear boxes, worn or not) . It will quiten it down, it wont fix the problem, if you have one.

When your power steering goes heavy, watch your speedo and see if it's still working.

Ive heard several zeds have an electrical fault which results in the speedo not working (drops off either end), and hence the cars computer doesn't know what speed the car is doing, and so the steering goes hell stiff.
