i know this has probably been covered before but i'm not quite sure what to search for.

Anyway, my problem is such - while cruising in third, at around 50-60 clicks, and in fourth, at around 80 my zed runs a bit rough. Ie it seems to misfire. Like it cuts in and out and hesitates a bit. It did this all of a sudden and now won't go away.
Do you think i'm running too rich and it's fouling the plugs? I haven't hooked up datascan yet but may do so this arvo. However when the throttle is opened up a bit more and in higher rev ranges it's fine and peppy as ever. It also idles fine too.

    help???

    See Tech A-Z/Misfire

Could be a combination of things but likely culprits are corroded or loose connectors to coil packs or injectors.

I have the exact same issue at the moment. It all started for me after changeing my sparg plugs.

Every coil pack connector was broken. I'm now ordering new ones and going to replace them.

    Cheers..

yeah i get hesitation and what seems like misfiring at around 2800- 2900 revs while cruising but not while acceleratiing. Doesn't seem to do it so much when it's cold but after running for a couple of minutes it seems to do it. So it would APPEAR to be slightly affected by heat, but not entirely sure. Also if i punch the pedal while it's doing it, it will almost instantly stop and i'll start accelerating and no more misfire. Yet if i slowwwwllly push it down i'll accelerate a little but the problems continues to just over 3000 revs.

    !! sigh

Missfire, Rough idling and occasional popping in the exhaust

G'day ... I'm new here ... I also have the same problem ... I have owned a TT for the past 5 years ... just recently I tore a hole in one of the cats on one of those stupidly high speed humps that are hard to see at nigh (being metal and unpainted), I also had the clutch replaced recently and noticed when patching the hole that the stainless braiding was damaged on the O2 sensors ... I'm still trying to diagnose the problem and would be very greatful if anyone could help out ... P.S. Does anyone know where there is a good 300zx machanic in Toowoomba?

    Not O2's

The SS braided wires you refer to are Cat Temp sensor wires. They are not monitored by the ECU so unless causing the Cat warning light to come on intermittently (in which case you can chop them off), don't worry about them.

    Spark plugs, distributor cap, rotor...

Your Z31 does not have coilpacks.

I'm not even sure wtf you're talking about, find a picture of it. Do you mean the ignition coil?

no, it was the distributor. i only want to know how to clean out the socket, for the coil ignition lead. or is it better to just buy a new distributor cap?

Mine did the exact same, i fixed mine by fixing the coilpack connectors, they were broken :)

it made this weird thudder noise when it dropped into 4th gear doing about 80kmph.. and it didnt sound too healthy.. :)

Mmmm ... Ok .. what now?

Ok thanks for the info K-zed! ... so where are the O2 sensors? ... next I'll check the coil pack connectors etc ... would you know what is the best way to test the coil pack driver unit? ...

Yes, or if you're broke you can just try roughing them up and removing it but I wouldn't bother. New cap, rotor, spark plugs etc Basic stuff. Buy a Haynes manual for the Z31 and read it all...

*sorry for the midway thread jack*
