Just needs a re-gas?

New car on the way from QLD :D

Only 1 thing worries me at the mo for pit inspection.

Current owner said aircon needs regasing. Has needed doing ever since engine swap (new engine came in on half cut from Japland I think)

However.... he said the climate control at the mo doesnt blow cold OR hot. It blows (ie all controls and fans working) but air is just room temp.

I take it this will affect the windscreen demister as well?

given that it doesn't blow hot either... will regassing really fix it or should I be ready for something a little more involved (im thinking heater core myself)

Advice really appriecated as I really want this car past the pits and on WA plates ASAP after arrival.

    Thanks guys.

RedZedMikey RZM should now be DZM

I can only reply from my own experience. My Z was blowing hot all the time - put Consult on the AC system, and it came back with a dead or missing sensor. Later on the heater core went, and after being bypassed it no longer blew hot air, just ambient. Cold on a cold day, hot on a hot day.

I suspect that your heater core has been bypassed, in which case the 2 water pipes on the back of the motor should have a hose connecting one to the other via a 180 degree bend instead of going down and connecting to the firewall heater pipes.

I'm not sure if "just" a re-gas of the AC system will be possible, or whether you will have to convert from R12 refrigerant to R134a, which will involve extra parts and higher cost. No idea how much though.

So you're thinking it might still have a Jap (non australia friendly) refridge system?

RZM is spot on, if its got the old system it will need to be changed over to the new one before anyone will regass it... prolly why the owner didnt get it done.
from memory im thinking 400$ or something for the change over? maybe 600 not 100% sure.

another thing with the air blowing out, could be a problem with the ambient air temp sensor on the front bar... if that old girls out it will always be displaying -88 degrees outside or so, in which case no matter what temp u set its always blowing out the same temp air which isnt hard to work out why.

    Different gas?

I had mine regassed when installing the new compressor and the mechanic mentioned nothing about different gas? and yes mine is J-spec.

    Hi Ugame...

First of all. Congrats with the new car. I hope you will be happy for it. Bugger you didn't bought mine...
Anyway I would be to sad to hand it over anyway

Regarding your heater/aircon. It is funny because the guy I bought mine from said the same thing. "Oh it just need regassing, and it will cost $40 dollars for a bottle." It turned out to be a missing blue connector block in the fusebox in the front right side when you look at the bay. So check if you have that one. However I replaced the block and it worked fine (Didn't need regassing) A few weeks after my compressor start to make screaming noices and stall my car. Which is why the previous owner would have removed the block.. :bash: :bash: :bash:
I hope it is not the case in your situation, but honestly when a seller saying "It just need regassing" You should wonder why he didn't just do it himself. :banned: :banned: :banned:

Ok for a RWC it won't need gassing. As long as you get airflow to the windscreen it will pass. Remember not all cars have A/C. But for personal comfort, spend the money to get it fixed:cool: :zlove:

yeah man sorry it wasn't your car i chose. Once id upped my budget, so many nice zeds appeared on the radar.

Urs was 2nd place, and I only chose the other car because Zed4Life had given it his thumbs up words of approval.

"no nasty suprises" coming from him is gold so im told, so hear, picked that car, as buying interstate is stressfull enough lol.

Hope it's all good, but from what I hear, Zed4Life's not a guy thats going to piss his reputation away just to help someone sell a car.

Cant wait to get the damn thing.

It's all good. I'm just teasing you :p
As long you bought a :zlove: everything is fine..

If Zed4Life gave the car thumbs up, I believe you got yourself a great Z. I just couldn't help thinking about my little regas story when I saw your thread. But as I said. I hope your problem is easy fixed and that you will have an awesome Z experience for long long time. ;) ;) ;)

You might want to read this article about air con because a lot of pre 1995 300ZX's came in with R12 systems. There is no such thing as a top-up these days unless the air con business wants to break the law.
