That DID happen to me way back when, in the '63 Falcon I had at the time. Coming back to Melbourne after visiting the olds in Broken Hill and the front left stub axle sheared off. Front of car dropped, lots of noise but no dramas re stopping... the friction of the body on the road was enough... didn't have any brakes anyway, they went with the wheel, and no split systems in those days. Last I saw of the wheel it was heading down the Calder at 100kph or so... never did find it! I didn't bother with a Tatts ticket that week... I'd used all my luck.
Doug's studs are good now..at least one is as i snapped one! Chad, if you had just put new mags on there, the alloy can compress slightly from new. i always advise people putting new wheels on to bring it back in 100kms to double check their nuts (eww) with a torque wrench. oh that reminds me, every check their nuts.... except for clara, she can look over my shoulder while i check.... that joke wouldn't of happened if i had enough sleep. Mind you, if the mechanic has rattle gunnned up the wheels, he may have OVER tightened two of the wheel nuts, causing them to fatigue, and the others may not have been tight enough in the first place.......or something... best thing to ensure the correct tension is a tension wrench/torque wrench. i feel assured when i'm playing with your nuts (eww) that they are tight- and i'm not going to damage your wheels with a rattle gun ref: Kr4usy. Ps, would it have done as much damage if the car was lowered further, ie less far to fall?
nope.. the two that snapped were the last 2 to go.. cos we found those 10m away from the car with the wheel nuts half undone on em.. i used them to put his wheel back on (and one from another wheel)
How much do you torque them to? 70 or so? Because I think thats what the service manual said and that didn't feel very tight :/
i torque everything passenger to 110Nm, it's higher than most things. but easy to remove- i have never had a wheel nut come off that has been torque wrenched tight. (FYI large 4x4's get 150Nm.) 70Nm could be undone with my eyelash... mind you i have masculine eyelashes,.
closer to 80.. and no it doesn't feel that tight when using a big torque wrench as you have a lot of leverage.
Yeah meant 70 feet/pounds, so 95Nm. I think I actually did it to around 100 Nm, but you say about 110? It probably feet loose because of the large torque wrench yeah.
gee whiz. Well I guess u can tell if ur wheel is comming off. I thought mine was the other day ( the car felt wobbly) so i got out and kicked all the wheels. but bye the looks of that i would know if 1 of my wheels were comming off.
lmao ,check them with a wheel brace ,kicking the wheels will just give you a sore foot, wheels falling off is going to give you a sore head
Yeah, was a great day... call in to Beaurepairs, Carlton (where Rik worked at the time) for a couple of new tyres. Got the tyres OK, but the mechanic put the wheels on the wrong side of the car. I pointed this out, so they put the car back on the hoist to change the wheels, and snapped one of the studs (at least you learned from that, Rik... lube the stud before you put the nut back on!). Spent the rest of the day (at no expense to me except for time wasted) at BR's preferred work-shop getting the stud replaced!
Yeah, I saw this too on my way to work, but the towie was already there so didn't bother to stop. Didn't see you tho andrew. Good thing you were there for him and hopefully he comes on the forum and joins the swelling ranks of WA zedders!! :zlove: Cheers Rob
