My ZX is making a wierd ticking noise and then when i start to drive she feels like she is skipping and missing when i reach about 3k+ rpm and i got told it could be a timing belt issue and if it was that it could damage a piston, valve, cam or cylinder and if it is that means big $$$... ohh and yes i just put new oil in her today actually... Please be kind and dont just slam things at me saying its this and that because i am not very high on cash as rego is due and so are car repayments so please be gentle...
can you get a video clip of the sound ? it might be a hydraulic lifter not pumping up correctly and not opening the valve properly, if not at all. maybe try a bottle of lifter free up, i tried it and it worked well.
got plenty of oil i put it in today... i am just really worried about the missfiring... could the ticking be a bad lifter and the misfiring be a bad sparkplug that plays up at 3000rpm+
check the timing belt it might be out abit ? have you done the 100k service? what condition was the old oil when you changed it ?
Missfire is probably an electrical issue, clean all your connections and check for error codes. Read the tech section...
... did you not read my reply ? If it is the lifter, it will not open up the valves right and mess up the EGT's in the whole process, if the EGT is below the spark plugs nominal operating temp it will not burn off all the carbon causing the misfires. can you get a clip or what ?
I have never heard of this affecting performance of a Z. The lifter would have to be seriously rooted for it to cause that sort of problem. Remember the total travel on a lifter is about 3-4mm and the lift on the cams is around 8.4mm. If the lifter is stuck extended (never heard of this happening by itself, always after people rebuild there lifters) it would cause low compression. If the lifter was stuck compressed then it would cause less lift and duration, reducing power out put of that cylinder. I very much doubt that the EGT's would be affected to the extent that you are claiming. Anyway EGT is directly related to the AFR...
Yes, i agree with what you are saying, either way both can affect EGT's, even if AFR's are slightly altered or not. my EGT's were 50degree's off once and it was enough for it to cause a slight miss/hesitation i'm not saying it's definately this, it may be a combination of a bad spark plug/dud lifter, or something else such as timing belt.
Seems kinda weird that they reckon that the timing belt just 'jumped a tooth' have you checked your timing? Another thing the oil you used is a tad thick. I used a oil that was too thin (5-30) and my lifters started to play up, maybe the thicker oil can also cause this problem? As Chr1s reccomends, check your plugs too.
It's a pain in the arse having a Zed that doesn't work properly too. Checking plugs is only difficult for no. 5 & 6 cylinders, the rest are pretty easy. Wiggle all connectors first and make sure they're properly seated, just to make sure you didn't knock one while doing the change. Checking timing can be done via CONSULT or with a timing light. CONSULT is easier. Read the Hesitation article in the tech section and try working through that as well.
i dont want to drive it in the condition it is in so does anybody know of any mechanics at all that could look at it tomorrow or anybody who has diagnostic knowledge or consult to come over to mine and check it out tomorrow? There is be Beer in it for anybody willing... I live in Jimboomba...
Just reading through the thread trying to learn a few things and nobody has mentioned injectors. Could an injector tick and cause a missfire at certain revs? Like I said just trying to learn a few things
